There should be enough people here being furloughed to be able to do this, why bring in plane load of foreign workers

I believe on the news tonight it was stated that fruit farmers had claimed they had advertised for a UK workforce, but not enough people responded.

It say 30,000 expressed an interest and 2,000 were being matched to roles. That’s different to 30,000 applied and got roles.

That's just mad, how do they only give 2,000 jobs.. 30,000 applied so they should of been hired surely. Media makes out we have to use foreign people..

hello, i agree, if 250,000 can volunteer to help the NHS, the 30,000 who applied in UK will get paid should have been given work, there is a farm i often see where up to a hundred or more foreign nationals working, now DEFRA is flying in 3000 Romania pickers, how will that help this lockdown, i cannot see them adhere to any Government rules

Some furloughed staff are doing the right thing.

Great news.

I have just spoken to a local firm here that wants to keep working and can do safely with workers in total isolation. Staff have said no they would rather be furloughed and sit idle at home. Boss is ripping his hair out.

hello, why does not DEFRA place and advert on TV, Britain Needs You, remember those posters

:good:

Why does the govt not insist that local furloughed workers do the jobs? Logistical nightmare either way.

hello, who would want to own a company with people like that ?? i do not agree with your other comment but if DEFRA did a advertising campaign i am sure they would get enough people at least for this year

One of my permissions is a farm in Margate that’s an airgunning paradise, rabbits, pigeon, crows, magpies and the processing plant right next to dozens of prefab cabins that the farmer has provided for the foreign workforce complete with cooking facilities, beds and gas canisters outside. Somehow I don’t think the ones complaining about all our jobs being stolen would be too keen on filling these vacancies.

Oddly enough whenever I’ve offered any of the slain to the workers they’ve turned them down.

I agree with your comment to some extent and sympathize with the employer, but maybe it is the furlough system that is flawed. To be perfectly honest if I had the option to not work for 80% of my salary I would seriously consider it! Maybe I'm misunderstanding how the system works but I thought if the employer is able to keep working safely within the guidelines, then he wouldn't have the option to furlough his staff? A minefield nonetheless.

That's simply not true IMO, my stepdaughter's boyfriend has been laid off and is looking for work. He has been trying to find these farm jobs without success. Most enquiries haven't even been replied to.

And yet, on the news this morning a flight of 180 fruit pickers from Romania is arriving at Stanstead airport this morning. That wasn't just decided overnight.

Sounds a bit fishy to me

Fair enough. Makes no difference to me really,  I’m just repeating what I heard on the news.
I hope the lad in question finds work soon.

hello, he can phone the NFU help line 0370 845 8458 they might help, they were going to put a list of farms wanting Labour so may be helpful, they also have details of companies looking for people to do farm work so will have details of web sites and phone details, and yes i agree it does sound fishy

Its a common ploy that many companies use (my wife used to work in HR for a City firm). You advertise in the UK but then claim you can't fill the role (never had any intention) then get dispensation for a overseas visa and get somebody cheaper (or in the case of labourers a better work ethic).

There are plenty of jobs for fruit pickers from the various websites I have been looking at, can he move up to Scotland as they are asking for workers from may onwards?

A lot of the websites are agencies that require a fee to register with them. Sometimes a big fee.

The ones that aren't, like a place in Mevagissy, he could walk to, just said leave your details and we will get back to you if we need you but many don't even reply.

Mate of mine has a electrical company, his staff did this, turned round and said they would not work, wanted furlough
