FAR WELTED
evening all, just after christmas i bought 3 silicone gun socks, begining of march i decided to use one on my best gun. i am very particular about cleaning my guns, they are kept in a dry place no damp. i went to get them out and check them, they were ok apart from my best gun. i took it out of the sock and it was covered with RUST. i was absolutely gutted mainly because my late father bought it for me just before he died in 1986 .i am in the process of cleaning the rust off polishing it and re-bluing the barrells. i have now got 3 silicone gun socks i wont be useing. PS i forgot to say my best gun is a WILLIAM EVANS 12BORE SXS EJECTOR BUILT IN 1915 it was a lovely gun untill the rust, hopefully it will be lovely again. i thought these gun socks were supposed to protect the gun. snow white
You must have had a bit of damp somewhere as I live in a caravan and none of my guns have any rust on them
FAR WELTED
hi mate , we have no damp at all. my other guns in the same cabinet were not in gun socks and were rust free.
Centrepin
Seems strange, all my guns are kept in those socks, various sock suppliers too. My son keeps his in socks too, two different cabinets. I think they're great. If my gun gets wet, I wipe it down put it in a sock, then a dry slip for journey home. Never had a problem. Yours isn't a chinese copy is it? Made of 💩

billytheghillie
Did you put gun in sock when it was wet or damp?
Centrepin
I have some Chinese 💩 that I keep in the car for wet days, from Ebay but really thin. My wife bought me some from Amazon, much more £s and really thick and quality. This is one of the thinnest ones, about £3 or £

Do you have to re-blue the barrels? Reason I ask, I had some rust on a barrel once and used gun oil and fine steel wool and it came out fine. button
I'm no expert but surely damp is involved for it to rust, could it be condensation? Was the action ok or had that rusted too?
FAR WELTED
hi mate, the action was rusty aswell, as i said earlier my other guns in the same cabinet were not in socks and were not rusty
button
And have you got the action cleaned up ok I am also very anal about looking after things so I can feel your pain on this one, like I say I am dreading opening the cabinet I have about 8 in the socks! snow white
All guns in socks no problem with them all guns used in all weather conditions rifles and shotguns
panoma1
Is not rust caused by moisture/damp? If the other guns were not rusty, surely it must be moisture on that particular gun.....or in the fabric of the sock? Edited to say I’ve just checked mine and all are fine! steve_b_wales
I use these on all my rifles/shotguns and have not had any problems. I also have VP90 vapour release sachets in my cabinets as well.
vmaxphil
Do you wipe the barrels and metal work over with a oily rag before putting the socks on?
