Lloyd90
Just looking at Holts auction and bloody hell there's some cheap guns on there (if you win the bid of course). Does anyone have any experience of them? What happens if you win the bid on say £100? I assume there are fees and such added on top? Do they then send to your local RFD or have to be collected or what? I think I will try and pick up an AYA no4 or similar with open chokes on there if I can. https://auctions.holtsauctioneers.com/asp/fullcatalogue.asp?salelot=S0320+++5791A&refno=149807&image=1 Now this looks mighty nice. Farmboy91
They are a nice bunch and very genuine. For me it was definitely worth the trip up there, there's a few other gun shops in the area and the north Norfolk coast isn't bad if you want to make a day of it. I brought mine as an unsold lot. Can't remember exactly but I think it ended up about £15 in fees on top of the price.
Vince Green
Definitely drive to pick it up 25 minutes ago, Lloyd90 said: says its re-sleeved. Much of an issue? Not for that price, a re-sleeve is min £1000 today. Most guns from the era of corrosive primers have had pitting. What year did they go to non-corrosive please? 35 minutes ago, Farmboy91 said: They are a nice bunch and very genuine. MrPhantom
There’s a payment calculator on the Holts listing - the fees work out about 30% of the hammer price. I’ve got a no.4 for sale but it’s half/full choked unfortunately. There is an open choked one on GT which might be worth a look: https://www.guntrader.uk/guns/shotguns/aya/side-by-side/12-gauge/no-4-200320161100548

I might take a look at some of those Webley and Scott’s if I can find a 2 3/4 chamber.
oldypigeonpopper
hello, not sure you can get a number 4 with 30 barrels, you might find a 700 with one, there seems to be a fair difference in no 4 prices, that one in holts with case seems a fair price, to be honest Lloyd i would look for a private sale or a RFD with a warranty Edited May 20, 2020 by oldypigeonpopper

Much of an issue? I would be inclined to steer clear of a single trigger on older English guns as I understand that they can be troublesome, but no doubt Gunman on here is best suited to advise on this. A sleeved (not re-sleeved, that's a misnomer) gun normally ensures that barrel dimensions are good, giving an older gun a new lease of life, but can, but not always, affect the balance. However, sleeved guns go much cheaper and can be bargains if you're not considering resale values. As said, it is doubtful whether you will find an AYA No.4 with 30 inch barrels. I don't think that you can go far wrong with an AYA in good condition. Good luck with your quest. OB

They were happy for me to work the action and dry fire it in the gun room. I completely stripped since and it's mechanically sound. I suppose any auction your taking a chance, but they didn't seem to me as the sort of place that would stitch you up knowingly. I met the owner Nick without knowing who he was, warm handshake then took the time to show me around and make sure I was sorted. One of the lads in the gun room said Mr bosher is a regular customer too 👍

Prices of these have really dropped over the last few years. I started visiting the auctions in the mid 2000s and its a lot of fun. Buying blind is always a risk, although they have an obligation to describe accurately and have to give you a wall thickness measurement and can only sell in-proof guns to consumers. I recently had a chat with another auctioneer. He said he had one customer buying up Webley 700s as an investment because they were so relatively cheap! Have a word with wabbitbosher. He usually has loads of good shotguns for sale, and even with the RFD - RFD charges, they are still good value. Webley 700 `s are at giveaway money now as you say. They were an aspirational gun for many of us years ago and it`s hard to accept they are no longer in any real demand. 701 & 702 are slightly more sought after but I think you`d have to be very optimistic to buy them as an investment!
