Effects of lockdown

There is a gun advertised by one of the members on here. Bargain, but can't travel to pick up and would have to travel to an RFD or the RFD would have to travel.

I decided to wait until things have settled down.

However, my eldest and his wife were considering another pup - they have a Bernese Mountain dog. You can't travel to see the pup and I presume the breeder could not travel to you. I wouldn't buy one unseen, but any litter already born or due in the near future would cause problems. I can't imagine many people placing a deposit on a pup they had not seen and probably wouldn't see until April next year, when the lockdown is to be reviewed.

Whilst it isn't the end of the world for my son, I felt a bit sorry for anyone with a litter of pups, as no-one will be buying six to eight month old pups.

Dave - in tier 3 - travel only where essential. Collecting a pup isn't.

And yet hundreds of people are doing it every day.

Scammers are also taking advantage of it, by stealing peoples fog photos online, advertising litters that never even existed and taking £500+ deposits from people.

I think one fake add took 80+ deposits of £500.

If I wanted another pup I would get it off someone I know, and on firm recommendation of people who’d seen both dam and sire.

At the price dogs are at the moment, and with realistically no chance of the price coming back down, the two dogs I have now are the last I'll ever be able to have. Which is sad, as I enjoy working them as much as shooting.

Don't worry, unfortunately the surge in dogs will end with the Covid pandemic when people go back to work and decide they haven't time anymore, the rehoming centres will be bursting at the seams.

Off topic but chap next door but one to me just sold a caravan and the bloke who fetched it traveled 75 mile to pick it up

Quite. It went on around the village also, right through the last lockdown. It’s just a hop skip and a jump over the tops to the NE, from here. Far too handy at times.

My pup is now six months old, from working stock and I know both owners of the two dogs from where mine came. I was charged 500 quid which I was quite happy to pay, but someone local to me was advertising cockapoos at 3.5k each......for a mongrel! They’ve all gone so whether they got the asking price or not I don’t know. Ridiculous price.

My wife works in a vet's, last week a client came in with a French Bulldog pup. All the paperwork was "in the post" and it has several underlying health problems, all for the bargain price of £8000

Here’s the thing, as much as we think it’s ridiculous, if he sold the whole litter for £3,500 per pup, it can’t be as mad as we think it is 🤷‍♂️

I think the price of pups will come down mostly because people will start going out again once lock down ends and simply won’t have the silly sums of money sat in their bank accounts.

Same here kennett , I have also owned Labradors all my shooting life , I accept each puppy you buy now have gone up from the last one you bought , but there would be no way I could afford £2000 + now I no longer work and just rely on savings and the state pension , still if the worse come to the worse I am sure my two grand children won't mind me spending there inheritance , or would they ? :hmm:

Indeed. A local ‘keeper sold an entire litter of Lab’s for 15k, mind you, they were all from excellent working stock with impeccable pedigrees.

How many did he have? Keeper I know says the fact he has 2 lab bitches in pup is the only thing that is going to save him from going under this year.

One litter KC Reg - £2,500 a pup, one litter non-KC reg - £2,000 a pup.

I honestly don’t know how many there were. I’ll be speaking to him in the next couple of weeks or so,  so will try to find out.

Friend of mine made a years wage from one litter of Lab pups, even allowing for docking etc it's still a tidy earner. Which is fuelling the rise in dog thefts
