Hi gang.

Went to a cafe today with my other half and we both had Skate chips and peas.

The fish had no and i mean no taste to it at all. Totally bland.

So i complained and the waitress said sorry and just charged me for the tea and coffee.

The thing is the cafe is always full and you have to wait to get a table. I've eaten there

before and it's been fine. Won't stop me going there but wont have fish again.

I once went to a well known ( at the time ) fish and chip shop in the town , I ordered two bits of Skate well done and one lot of chips , when it was done the lady wrapped it well and it cost fairly good money at the time , when I got home my wife called me into the kitchen and said smell that bit of fish , I didn't need to get any closer as I could smell it from where I was , no way was I going to eat that , I jumped back into my motor and took the whole lot back , when I got to the fish shop there was 5 or 6 people in the q and I wasn't in the mood to wait my turn , I had no more to do than go straight into the front and asked the lady who was in charge of this shop , she said they only worked there and what was the problem , I opened the paper and said smell that bit of rotten fish , she said it wasn't rotten it just smelt a bit off, so I went and asked the people in the q what they thought and they all said it smelt and two of the back ones walked back out .

The lady who said she only worked there asked me if I wanted another bit of fish or my money back , after telling her I was in a good mind to report the foul smelling fish and I certainly didn't want any more so she gave me my money back, I was still out of pocket but at least I felt better by taking it back and telling her how I felt .

Hello John,

Did the skate smell of ammonia, only I was told to hang skate for a day or so to get rid of the possibility of ammonia coming out of the skin. Never had any problems with skate (thornback rays) I caught myself, but did have to return a bit of skate at a pub once that stunk of ammonia (the skate not the pub:lol:)

Morning Chris .... Yes you were bang on the button , it smelt like a cat or cats had been using it as a toilet from the day it was caught , we have had skate from many fish and chips in the area and that bit would have easily got the number one spot for marks out of ten for the worst bit we have ever had , we have got some really good ones about and our number one chippies goes to Mary Janes , Garden St in Cromer , always fresh and cooked while you wait , then walk around the corner and sit on the bench watching the world go by in the North sea , well worth the hours drive from mine.:good:

Pollack and coalfish have got to be the worst fish for eating.

I like pollock, coalie tends to be a 1lb or so here so is returned, nice in batter but better marinated in Thai green curry sauce for an hour then cooked with red pepper and served with noodles.

Agree pollack can be excellent, overnight in chiller first of course.
