Not live pigeon it was an imitation live pigeon day which more than likely would have been glass balls staffed with feathers which then was common . Pushandpull
A quick look on line shows that this (1893) was the first year of the Inanimate Bird Shooting Association. Disc targets, much like our modern ones, were already in use and were made from various materials including clay - which became the accepted term in later years. Westley
My first clay shooting competition was in 1974. It was a 50 bird English Skeet competition. I used my only gun, a S x S AyA No. 2. Of a field of over 90 shooters, I managed to finish 9th. I bought a pair of Remmie 1100's shortly after, 1 Skeet and 1 Trap. I was a lot younger and fitter then so could lump 2 guns around a shooting ground.

Even if I had been alive (it was the year my Grandfather was born!) there would have been no chance of my being there because: a) I would have been a peasant, and only the better-off could afford to shoot, just like now. b) I am totally non competitive and would not go near a clay shooting competition. Feltwad That looks more like a live pigeon event that a clay shoot; look at the strings, pulled to release the pigeons.
