That is some very special fish , is there any way you can tell the age of a fish that size ?

P S .. I wonder how our forum chef ( ditchman ) would get that in his pan   ( joking of course )

There must be a way of aging them but I don’t know so far I have caught three 20/37/38 and as the biggest carp I have ever caught was 15 lb I am over the moon and Steve just can’t stop catching we are here until Saturday   I am sure Simon will have plenty of recipes for it probably with oven chips 😂

THANKS for the update , certainly some incredible fish , will it spoil you when you come back home knowing you are not likely to get the same size fish ?

It would also be interesting to know how long these huge fish live for ?

GOOD LUCK ,and the photos are great    MM

I spoke to the bailiff today mm and he said the fish over 45 lb are about 15 years old he said in France they put on so much weight quick they seem to live to about 20 where in England they are slower growing and can go to 30/40 years old

Over 15 years, as that is the general skeletal growth period for carp. I would guess somewhere between 15 and 25 years. There a many different strains of Cyprinus carpio, that all have different growth rates.

Many THANKS for the update , 15 / 25 is a good ole age , 30 / 40 would possibly make them a bit on the tough side and at that age they had seen a few Winters where there living quarters freeze up , amazing how they survive all those years .    :good:    MM

There are a number of carp in the UK into their 60's.

Hello, I am sure the Richard Walker carp was around that age

Walker's fish, 'Ravioli' although later named 'Clarissa', from Berinthian Pool, (Remire - nicknamed after the red soil colour) was caught in 1952 and was stocked in 1934 by Donald Leney of the West Sussex Trout Farm as a fingerling, so a C1 (one summer fish). The fish was from Holland and of the Polish Galacian strain, commonly reffered to a 'Leney's' in the UK and he stocked them all over for a number of years. They are, where still alive, are some of the most sought after fish in the country.
