Whilst it's the right thing not to let go of any other territory (and I would also like to say the same if any artefacts in museums, collections etc.) - what they say now and what the do in the future are largely unconnected.

Remember the old saying when feeling pleased "Blessed is he who expects nothing - for he shall not be disappointed"

at least we are returning one place we got by removing the natives by force destroying lives and stealing their homeland just the pretence and white wash left to apply now!

You forgot the compensation payments, return of artifacts, reinstatement of ancient burial mounds, and a formal apology from the King.

Giving them away was a tory project. Delivered by labour 🤪

Delivered by the uni party I think you mean.

Apparently there is a large population in London of people from Chagos and they are up in arms about this. Their (Labour) mp was on the radio lambasting the decision. Remember, they have given the islands (archipelago) to Mauritius, not to the natives. All to appease China

Interesting stuff. A China angle as well.

It occurs to me that IF we attempted to defend that tiny albeit significant outpost from Chinese aggression we'd get well and truly decimated.

I wonder what it cost us to 'own' that location vs what we gain from it these days rather than our empirical days.
