Knee Replacement

I have been waiting for the past 3 1/2 years to have a full knee replacement on my left knee.

My brother in law went private a few years ago and paid £10,500 and had it done within a few weeks of his consultation ,but had a few problems and had to return to the clinic.

His recovery was slow, but he, is all good now, and back doing his endurance cycle challenges.

I received a phone call today, and the receptionist at the hospital asked if I could attend a pre-assessment check next Thursday at our local hospital, and the operation will be performed 7 - 14 days later.

At present I’m in constant pain and find it difficult walking the spaniels, and tend to choose, the flat easy option and no uneven ground.

At last, there’s light at the end of the tunnel, and hopefully I will be able to get back to normality once the procedure is carried out, and make a good recovery 👍

I’m just looking forward to being able to walk where I used to walk previously and not have to choose the easy terrain 🤞

Yes it’s been a long time waiting.

I received a NHS questionnaire, back in November asking me if I still needed the operation, and if I did, I would have to fill out the questionnaire.

The questions had no relevance, to my condition, and received an update, telling me I could speak to someone, who would advise me on how to manage my daily life and how to manage the condition.

Do they think the condition is just magically fixed by itself !

The orthopaedic surgeon who I had seen previously, showed me the scan of my knee and advised me to have the full knee replacement, due to the wear and tear of the joint.

That’s the NHS Wales waiting list for you, a total shambles.

Good luck with your long awaited knee operation Kevin , all the people I know who have recently had a hip operation have nothing but praise for the quality of life it have made and also are now virtually pain free , the only slight bit of bad news is our tractor driver who drive the beaters about should have had his hip operation on the 7th of Jan and was cancelled at the last minute , it should now be the 30 th of Jan so it wasn't much longer to wait .

All the best and keep us up to date with the progress .

My GP told me that they don’t like giving you a knee replacement in your 50s because the replacement is only good for 10 years, and they prefer you to have it later in life.

I told my GP I need it now (63) and not when I’m in my 70s as l am in constant pain and unable to have a good quality of life, and do the things I enjoy.

I have had numerous cortisone injections over time and found they would work for a short time, but wasn’t very successful.

Cortisone injections work for some people, but there are only so many you can have.

I was given painkillers to take, but the side effects were worse than the constant pain (nausea, headaches and at worst vomiting ).

I’m actually looking forward to having the operation and getting on with life 👍

Do knee joints regenerate of their own accord?

Why would you NOT still need a knee replacement, unless you had died and then didn't complete the bloody questionnaire?

I honestly don’t know what they’re thinking.

I received an email from the hospital, telling me I had to fill out the questionnaire, and if I failed to fill it out, it could jeapardise my position on the waiting list.

I received the exact same questionnaire 3 times over the 9th, 11th and 13 November.

I tried emailing and ringing them to no avail, and no reply.

Yes i got told that as well while i was being accessed there was a 82 year old woman getting a new knee and i thought if i got it i could keep working , But no they are happy giving me the injections a blue badge and pain killers and disability allowance LOL

I try no to take the painkillers as there addictive and get by with lots of paracetamol
