Pigeon to Cartridge

I get the chance to shoot pigeons for one month of the year and nearly always have a ratio of about 3 to 1, that is 3 cartridges fired for one bird killed. This doesn't seem to change however many birds i take.

Is this about average?

One chap shot 47 birds but used all of his 150 cartridges, again approx 3 to 1

What is a good average?

as long as your getting the shooting who cares :good: i say if you have a hundred shots you have had agood day no matter how many birds shot but would say i shoot about 3to 1 shome times better most of the time worse  every time you go out it is different as long as your happy and getting some shooting enjoy it what ever your kill rate is !

It all depends doesn't it?

Shoot on a relatively still day when they're pitching in,same or similar shot again and again and it's 3 shots to 2 birds. Shoot them in a howling gale when they come from all directions, jinking, weaving, hacking through at pace and 5:1 seems OK to me especially if they are skittish. Newly fledged birds (October time) who have never seen a deek or rotary can be suicidal and if you do it right, few shots are dropped. The best advice I ever had from an old boy was to only shoot birds "under-carriage down" if you needed to be shell concious. We all have good and bad days. I always shoot a load better if I'm warm, my digits function and I haven't got 13 layers of clothing on. Makes a difference.

had a couple of hours decoying yesterday shot at 7 pigeons and killed them all with 9 shots, but other than 1 good shot they were all over the magnet, i was well chuffed with that.

surprising how many young stumpy headed fledgelings are about even in mid feb

I shot 8 with 1 shot so whats the ratio on that :good:

Out decoying on rape got feed up went for a walk over to the other fields, spoted 50 feeding, got into ditch to get within range when suddenly from behind me came hundreds of pigeons all piling in this went on and on until about 1000 had landed.

The closest being about 6 foot away took aim with my side by side 16 bore, took out 8 with the first barrel fired second into the flock and missed completely.

Got back to the hide where my mate was sat drinking his coffee, he could not believe it.

As a rule 1 : 3

As well as marksmanship it comes down to the shots you are willing to take. For instance you could wait for the 'sitters' and very easy shots or you could be blasting at any bird within 40-50m depending on your shooting style.

I have days when I want to see 75% kill to cartridge ratio. Other days I am glad when I take out a nice bird after missing a few in a row! :P To be honest, decoying I would see 2:1 at least. Any less and my obsessive, high expectations of myself kick in and I'm not happy! :good::P

Cheers

My average was very bad today. I shot a cut maze strip with 100 on friday and 200 on Sunday and used 488 shells. I was asked to shoot a drilled field today , but drew a blank , and with only a couple of hours shooting time left I nipped back onto the cut maze as its also on a good flightline , not that I expected much. A lot of the birds were very spooky ( not surprising considering the pasting they have had ) flaring at the slightest movement in the hide and coupled with a gale made for some tricky shooting. ended up with 19 for 51 shots.
