David BASC
Dear All, I am interested to learn with brand of cartridge you prefer, and what shot size? I am toying with the idea of doing an article in BASC's trade newsletter in the July issue on cartridges that people use in the Sumer time i.e. mainly for clays, pigeons and rabbits. Also – what are your main buying criteria – is it just price, or is brand loyalty, or recommendation more important? And here is a bit of an incentive, if more than 10 different members post replies (giving me the info) I will stump up 250 cartridges and pull names out of a hat- for one of you to win the lot! ProteuS
Hi David, for clays all year round i prefer the red rottweil 28g cartridges. Although i've been shooting Eley 28g 7.5's that my uni club has had printed up for a bit. for rabbits / pigeons, i tend to just use what i have around, at the moment it's some express 32g 6's. As for main buying criteria, I'm quite happy to try different cartridges here and there, although there are some cartridges i stay away from. I'm not a fan of D & J clay cartridges, as we used to get them for the club as they were very cheap, but they were just dirty in my opinion. I seem to get along well with eley and express stuff, so I guess i have a brand loyalty to them. I will try cartridges on reccomendation and have had some good experiences with reccomended cartridges (particularly the rottweils). Price is an issue if i'm buying alot, but as I don't go through massive numbers on my live cartridges it isn't the deciding factor. I'm not too concerned with wad type although i tend to prefer fibre. hope that answers your questions. Imperfection
Im not really brand loyal, but my local gunshop does do me good deals on Gamebores Velocity 32gm 6's.They're not hard on the shoulder, bring down the pigeons well enough and i find them a clean cartridge. For clays i buy 28gm 7.5 Eley blues from local clay ground cos they're cheap!
Salop Matt
My preference is game bore white gold now but as they are expensive and not of regular supply for me i use Eley blues for clays. I normally use Eleys for game to but if dads buyin am not fussy ! but always fiber wad.
alexm
Clays (general) - Around here, make is normally dictated by the grounds! Clays (competition) - Express super comp 7.5's if CPSA event or Gamebore White Gold if fibre restriction Game - Express Supreme Game 32g 5's Rough (and PSG) - Gamebore clear pigeon no. 6's

libs
For clays I normally use my clay grounds own load (Hull 15/16 oz of #7) but have brought in quite a few Hull comp X 28g and found them very reasonable and soft on the shoulder. The reason I use them is because I have been told Hull make a good cartridge ( in >1500 I havn't had a misfire so far) and just didn't see much point in changing. For anything flying or running I just buy in whatever I can get in 30 - 36g of 5-6 shot. Price really does come into this even though I don't get out in the field often. The only thing I really won't buy is plaswad stuff, its just not nice to see it lying about, even if it does give better patterns..... kennym
Rio royal game 32g 5s I use as an all rounder pigeons, game & rabbits (ok so there pink we're all freinds here right?) Rio super game 32g 6s I buy in the summer when I mainly shoot pigeons but I will take the odd rabbit I find Rio's good cartridges but as long as there a decent quality the price dictates what I buy clays I use what ever the clay ground has 28g 8s it supports them & means I don't have to cart them about its good to talk and its amazing what the sniff of free stuff will get you talking about.... Hes a great guy that David (grovel)
sheene7
Always used to use 28g Eley firsts 8's in fibre, but had a few misfires so I lost confidence in them. Bought 2000 28g Hull comp X 8's in fibre , not had a problem with them. I've been trying 28g Eley olympic trap and 24g Lyvale express 7.5's in plaswad lately, both decent cartridges. But when these run out, I'm thinking of using 28g S& B's in both fibre and plaswad although they are a bit more punchy, because my mate can get them cheap
Nicky T
This is what i use: Sporting practise; Lyalvale Express High Velocity 21g 7.5's Sporting competitions (monthly members shoot or reg comps as of sunday!); Lyalvale Express Pro Comp 28g 7.5's Skeet practise; Lyalvale Express High Velocity 24g 9's Pigeons; Lyalvale Express Special Pigeon 28g 6's As for why?: I've spent the last year trying out various brands and like the consistency and performance of the Lyalvale range. I went through a phase of wanting to be like George and shooting White Gold but that didn't pan out well so decided to be like Richard instead Never pattern plated my gun/cartridge/choke combo so not got a clue about patterns that my current combo "throws" but it seems to be working out well at the moment - sunday will tell for sure Hope that helps, Nick
Blunderbuss
I'm new to this, so don't place too much credence in what I think! Eley blues, fibre wad 28g 7.5s for clays. Eley Real Tree pigeon 30g 6.5 fibre wad for woodies - coz I got a good price on them. Edited April 3, 2009 by Blunderbuss

J@mes
eley olympics 28gram 7.5 plastic here! why? because its all I have ever used (apart from 100 D&J) and they are cheap, dont kick and dont leave the barrels filthy. Someone buys them for me so I dont have to go and get them, I just collect them when I go shooting. Makes it easier Edited April 4, 2009 by J@mes
wymberley
Inspite of the difficult job of removing the fouling these leave, Eley Realtree Pigeon 30gr 6 1/2 shot.
blackthorn
don't shoot clays. for pigeon and rabbits at the moment its express pigeon special plas wod 30g was using Ely hb i was getting a lot of misfires, the primers seemed to be at different depths, first barrel fine second barrel lots of misfires must be a short pin, no problems on express. mates lanber had no problems with the Ely hb, i gave him the last 250 i had

VicW
David, Clays only for me. My choice is a combination of price versus quality. Currently Eley Olympics, 28gm,7.5s but the new Kent Velocity are apparently very good.
Whitebridges
Clays: Fiocchi Top One No. 7.5 shot 28g Pigeon and Rabbit: Fiocchi Sporting Pigeon No. 6 shot 32g Definately not brand loyal, other makes are just as competitive. Difficult to buy total rubbish these days. Tend to buy a box or two to try. If I like 'em will them negotiate a deal for bulk and it's suprising what you can get off with a bit of haggling. lowlander
i use gamebore super steel 24 gram 7.5's for clays, game highbird 32 gram 6's and eley vip 30 gram 5's for pigeon, rabbit etc lowlander
richg
Hi There, I have always sworn by 32g 6's for all my game and pigeon shooting, but lately i have been using Kent velocity 7 1/2s for decoying and they are mustard, and at the right price too, £124 a thousand, they are also good clay busters. I have used cheap cartridges and expensive cartridges and the difference is negligable as there are no bad cartridges any more. If you are shooting clays at top level and you feel that you need a top cartridge, then fine, but for mr average, shooting clays or pigeons an economicaly priced cartridge is fine, because lets face it, if you miss a bird it may not be the fault of the cartridge.
