Pigeons V Clays

After Cheryls post about trying the Pigeons for the first time, I've been at it as well :P

Magman very kindly invited me to have a go at the Woodies, with Jay last night

I'd never shot anything except clays before, so I was going to be a bit green  . I got round to Magmans gaff about 4:30 and we piled into his 4 x 4 and headed for one of his many permissions (they seem to cover most of NW England) . It was a lovely bit of land, I would even have enjoyed sitting out there with nothing to shoot, it was nice to be away from Manchester.

I had to leave the setting up of the hide to Magman and Jay as I had no idea what the **** they were doing, but they got a bit of a hide set up under an Oak at the edge of a wheatfield that had been partially flattened by our glorious weather  . They whacked some deeks out in the field, which looked a bit of a scientific process and once we had shot the first bird. it got planted out there with them  .

It started off a bit slow and Magman said we needed to get the magnet thingey going, for which we needed a couple more birds. Once we had them, he got that set up and we settled in to wait.

After about 2 minutes :P my knees were killing me, so Magman fetched a folding (camo) stool for the old *** from his car, which made life a lot easier.

It was surprising what a difference the magnet made and we had a steady stream of birds for the next couple of hours. They're certainly a lot different to clays  and I had a bit of trouble with a few of them, jinking and accelerating, in a very un-claylike fashion  . We must have had about 100 - 115 I reckon, and that was mostly Jay and me, as Magman opted to sit back and observe and advise.

A very enjoyable evening in great company. Great shooting as usual from Jay, who hit more doubles than me  . I don't think my birds-to-shots ratio was too good, looking at the mound of empty shells I removed from my bag this morning :P . I seemed to have a tendency of either missing :P or wasting the second barrel shooting at birds that were already hit and dropping  . I was also a bit impatient at first, trying to hit them too far out.

In answer to Magman's question "which do I prefer?" , I can honestly say that the two sports are sufficiently different to stand alone in their own right. Both great sports for very different reasons. Clay shooting satisfies the competitive thing within some of us (I'm not sure that Magman bothers with this) and Pigeon shooting, whilst non-competitive, satisfies the hunting urge. I'm not really able to make a comparison, as the sports are too different. I can certainly see that, if the shooter doesn't have a competitive nature, then clay shooting would become boring very quickly, whereas Pigeon shooting never would.

At the end of the night, I managed to lock my car keys in the back of my car  so Magman had to drive me all the way home and back to get the spare key, for which I am eternally grateful and apologetic :good: .

A truly great night, one which I won't forget. Many thanks to the pair of you

What a great forum this is for meeting some top blokes

Nice one, glad you had a great time, nice to read your report and thoughts on pigeon shooting, from a clay shooting man i find that pleasing as personaly me and the sport have been slagged off by so many clay shooters i have met! not all but a fair few.

I have no interest in clays myself short of the annual social pigeon club knockabout and bar b as i have about a near zero competetive nature, but you summed it up very well they are both totaly different sports in their own rights, well done :good:

Top stuff, the bag was a good one too.

Clay's v Pigeon's. As you say, totally different. I love clay shooting, you know you're going to get some shooting and banter in. Pigeons, well hopefully you'll get some dinner in and satisfaction that 'other' skills bought them into range and also test's your patience. :good:

Funny but sometimes its nice to sit back and watch somebody else shoot , both you and jay must of shot at 50% so a fair % there  ( out shot by an 11 year old  as he hit more doubles than you :good: )

All that going "birds only" paid off in the end

Seriously though, good write up and good photo. I knew Magman was a top bloke, I'd have made you get the bus home!!

Mr (Jealous) Potter

Good on you chard and glad you had a good time. Two completely different disciplines you must surely agree. The adrenaline on the pigeons for me is addictive, do you find that? If you want to do it again, PM me.

Cheers Jim :good:

Definitely get a buzz from it when you see those birds coming in, without a doubt.

It was also great to see a kid so engrossed in a sport. No chance of Jay getting bored with it. He would have had us there till after dark if he'd have had his way  .

We'd have been lamping the ******* things
