the best flapper when NOT on a budget
activeviii replied to BenBhoy's topic in Pigeon Decoying Equipment
use the intermittent and the remote all on the same flapper. i leave then flapping randomly but as a bird starts to pull in i turn the flapper off as i have had too many birds jinx when the flapper moves are the wrong time. -
I have been using FUD's for a long while. out of the box they are no lighter that a half shell but with a little work you can get them very light and use sticks to get them up over any crop height. mine bounce and wobble in the wind, it the wind is strong enough then they also swing to face the wind. I still have a place for the half shells but i use fuds as well.

******** my battery just ran out
activeviii replied to welshwarrior's topic in Pigeon Decoying Equipment
toolstaion are cheaper than screwfix. a 7amp barrtey will give me around 8 hours on the rorary which is fine in winter but summer i use a 12 amp and get more than enough time out of it. Phil. -
I phoned in to the office and asked whats going on. we found it was a problem with the link in Germany that didnt want to talk to virgin uk. it should be all sorted now. i dont normally have problems with virgin net, i get 9.5 from a 10 meg connection but then i set mine up with a clean run of cable right to the amps.hehe.

How early in the day do you start shooting ?
activeviii replied to Target Practice's topic in Pigeon Shooting Tips
depends on the area. if there is no houses close then i have started shooting at 0430. if in a built up area then around 0900 until 1730. i tend to shoot until i start missing easy birds, thats telling me i'm tired so i just call it a day. there's always tomorrow to have another go. -
I think cranfield nailed it more. the one most important thing is reconnaissance. get out and find the birds, once you have found them that let them build for as long as you dare. some of my better bags have been totally out of the blue and totally opposite as to what most would expect. wind very light and into my face. bright sun. hot. birds coming in singles and then 20 at a time. fuds or half shells as its standing crop so cradles will not hold dead birds high enough. i guess there is no hard fast rules to it all. just get out and enjoy what shooting you get and dont get hung up on big bags.

done to get the second chit. you get the left over rape seed to germinated so they can plough later, once the leaves are up and then there is no worry of it germinating once another crop is put in.

You put salt in to draw the blood. if not then you get bitter tasting meat. one rabbit and a tablespoon of salt, 2 rabbits then 2 table spoons and so on. check your soak after 6 hours, if its really bloody then rinse and re-soak. i put mine in at tea time, check before bed then wash and rinse in morning. I like to do all mine as soon as they are brought home, then bagged and frozen

on average im shooting better than 2:1. some days im doing 170 birds for 200 carts and other im doing 20 birds for 50 carts. on the last 1000 carts i shot 700 birds so happy with that but as soon as the bird numbers start to drop my ratio will change, it did last year.hehe

i use a pinewood, the arms are 6mm and can be adjusted for height. i put one arm high and one low, plus i can tilt the birds inwards as if its a bird turning to get into the wind to land. if it is windy then one bird flat and one tilted in. the flat but climbs as it cuts into the wind and then drops. hinged arms on the pinewood are very useful. i wouldn't buy and other rotary now.
-
If one had landed i wait to see if it will draw another, then kill the one coming in and then it gives the chance to swing to the bird that is panicking off the floor and trying to work out which way to go. if a few are coming in i try and watch for the committed front bird, wait till it tries to land then shoot the back bird and follow up with the front bird. if their not really playing ball i will shoot what ever is presented. floor, tree or sky, im not proud.

i use either FUD or half shell, depends on what im trying to get out of the pattern. sometimes i find that with no wind that the half shells do not work and in bright sun, even though they are flocked. if i need movement then i use my modified fuds. i have got rid of the heavy plate and replaced with bike spokes and washers then put spoke in end of bamboo cane. i find that FUDs work best on sowings and winter rape, not so well on standing crop. have yet to try them on the stubble.

all the bits that brake off and get in your socks, itch like mad. same on the dogs coat, plus the amount that gets in the ear and does not come out by its self. cost me to much money with visits to vets. just not fair to work a dog in it. i know a lot of good dog handlers and they will not work dog in drying barley.
