retromic-with the greatest of respect you are incorrect in one major aspect-the OP is returning the gun under his "consumer rights" and not under the warranty terms (which are offered in addition to your consumer rights)-your consumer rights in the UK are about the best in Europe-the problem is that nobody bothers to read them-millions of people throw money away every year buying extended warranties for white goods-your consumer rights are far more powerful and can last up to 7 years.

The maker and then the dealer set the price of any item-it is up to them to calculate the manufacturing costs and then add the profit margin-the item is then offered for sale fit for the purpose that it is intended for. Our man has paid over £2 for his item and has every right to expect a good quality item that will last a reasonable time-this has not been the case and, by law, even if the gun was 5 years old he would have a good case to take the matter to court-in fact if I were in his shoes and the dealer had the audacity to say that the product was out of warranty I would go straight to my nearest small claims court and start legal proceedings. Its a civil matter and not a legal one-if you want you can explain that the charge is "unreasonable" and you are happy to meet them in a small claims court-they must prove that they have suffered financial loss by your payment being late which is going to be difficult.

TX200 would be the ideal replacement IMO but if weight was becoming an issue then try as many as you can.
