foxbuster
As the title, i've worked a 3 shift pattern, 06:00-14:00/14:00-22:00/22:00-06:00, since i was 17 (now 30) and have started wondering if i'd prefer to do the traditional 9-5? I work as a maintenence fitter in a car component factory. Who else on here do these kind of hours and what do you do? Do you find you get more or less opurtunities to do the things you love-Shoot! ozzy518
I have worked shifts since i was 18 - now 43..I now do a variation of 2x 0700-1700, 2x 1600-0001 and 2 x 2300-0700..The lates can finish at 0400hrs depends on what day of the week it is ie, if the pubs/clubs are open. Oh the joys of public order policing!! At the end of all that I get 4 days off. I would hate to work 9-5 with just the weekends off. Everyone else is off at the weekend it seems so places are always crowded.
Dave-G
Permanant 5 or 6 all nights as a taxi driver for over 30 years so I try to maintain the body clock any way I can which sometimes involves an all night lamping session from the vehicle. I quite often miss out on some things I'd like to do but have learnt to do solitude quite well. It's almost impossible to find a shooting partner who could match the hours on a regular basis. Despite good intentions it's not their fault it's mine so I have about stopped trying. Edited November 18, 2010 by Dave-G
pigeonblasterian
7 to 7 12 hour shifts nights and days.Eight days off in a row every three and a half weeks.Plenty of time for shooting.
weejase
I`ve worked nights for the last 11 years and I think It`s a great shift I can go out lamping on my nights off and I get up at 12 noon every day I`m working so I have plenty of time during the day for a wander with the gun. At this time of the year I could still get an hour or two with the lamp after work as well so all`s good Edited November 18, 2010 by weejase

inthedark
I've worked both, and found Mon to Fri 8 x 4 a right killer, no personal time. Never again.
Sprackles
I work a 12 hour 4 on 4 off pattern with an 18 day break after the 7th lot of 4 days. As from next year, I am changing to 4 on, 4 off with a 10 day break after the 3rd lot of 4 on. 2 days, 2 nights, 4 off. 2 days, 2 nights, 4 off, 2 days, 2 nights, 10 off. Plenty of time off
njc110381
I admire people who work varying shifts. How the hell do you do it? All this 2-10/10-6 etc, your body clocks must be raging! I'm pretty sure a job like that would do me in although I've never tried it. Insociable hours could be handy - getting time off when others are working is a great thing to do and me and my lads often work bank holidays in exchange for a day at another time. It's just so much better not to have to deal with everyone else trying to do the same as you! What I don't get is why factories don't have day and night shifts any more? There must be some people out there that are happy to do nights and I think I could do them. The only thing that does put me off is the fact that they always seem to be changing! I like routine, I just don't think I could change that regularly without feeling like the walking dead! One last thing.... Do you guys on nights not miss having someone in bed with you? My mrs went away for a week not all that long ago and I think I got about three hours sleep per night. It just wasn't right!

Chris Bb
i do 2 days 2 nights 4 off and love it. who gets down for a few zzzzzzzzzzz on nights ????? My last job worked that pattern, I only lasted a year, HATED every minute of it. No chance of a kip at night either although I allowed my staff to if it was a quiet night. Currently I work 0500ish - 1400 ish or 1300ish - 2200ish, better with shorter shifts and no nights but the shift pattern is ****, the body clock's permmanentlly confused and I eat a lot of instant meals, not good! Working weekends and having days off midweek does have its positives but I can't always get to shoot competitively when I would like to, like every other Sunday. vole
I work in health care and have done a 24hr shift pattern for 25 years . I do feel a twit when traipsing to work on Christmas morning when the world is sleeping off a hangover . Even worse is going in for a night shift ( 2100 - 0800 ) on a lovely summer evening .I do like to take advantage of the lack of crowds when fishing or walking or (gag) shopping and that just about outweighs the disadvantages .It does impact on home life inevitably not being around of an evening .At the moment we have illness in the family so I can help out when everyone else is working .I am not good on nights and dread anything happening that involves any thinking or effort at all once it is past 0400 . Pipmoff
I worked a 3 shift pattern from 17 years old. Then when I changed jobs to my current employer I worked mon to fri days until a job became available on weekends. I now work 12 hour shifts on a weekend alternating days one weekend then nights the next weekend and then 2 day shifts through the week. But I volunteer for most of the night shift covers that are going as I prefer working nights to 7.45-4.30 days.

ME
I work very unusual shifts. It can really mess with your head. I turn up sometime between 0900-1700hrs Monday - Thursday. If I get tired I call a "meeting" and will go home and have a sleep. If the opportunity for shooting / eating or drinking comes up I will call a "meeting" and leave. I have a LOT of meetings I have a three day weekend. I have done for about 4 years now. I get the right hump if I have to attend on a Friday. If I do have to work a Friday I normally reward myself with two days off the following week. I take off all/most of August and most of December off every year. I like to give myself time to rest and plan for all the "meetings"
jonno 357
I work a 12 hour 4 on 4 off pattern with an 18 day break after the 7th lot of 4 days. As from next year, I am changing to 4 on, 4 off with a 10 day break after the 3rd lot of 4 on. 2 days, 2 nights, 4 off. 2 days, 2 nights, 4 off, 2 days, 2 nights, 10 off. Plenty of time off I use to work that pattern Now work 4 NIGHTS 5 OFF 2 DAYS/3NIGHTS 4 OFF 5 DAYS 12 OFF 35 day cycle contracted to 362 days Don't work xmas eve xmas day or boxing day. Have to work new years eve though if it falls on my shift pattern Plus 5 floatings day which sorts out the usual emergencies If we are on the sick during the the 12 day break (7 days with sick note) we get 40 hours back  So it makes sense to ring in sick on your 12 day break and get 3 shifts and 4 hours the company owe you. Its open to abuse but we very rarely get anyone ringing in sick when they are working
Sprackles
Similar arrangement for me except we shut down xmas eve and reopen 2nd Jan. 4 Flexi days and days returned when off sick in the 10 day (next year) or 18 day break.
