Billy.
Just got off the phone to a man who has been unemployed since 2008. I had a job which was local to him. It fitted his background really well, even though he'd been out of work. The role would have got him back into work and renewed his CV. Apparently £23k is "Not something I could live on" ******* disgraceful Rant over.
Dr W
Guess he's got into a nice routine being paid his benefits although I thought if he turns down work his benefits would stop? It's crazy he could have done the work for 6 months to a year and then looked for a new role paying more?

CZ550Kevlar
I think they only lose benefits if they turn down employment offered by the plebs in the dole office. £23k isn`t enough? what a Muppet, he is the embodiment of everything that is wrong with society. I agree I think if someone is offered a job and they do not take it they should lose benefits. Is there no where to report this kind of thing. Makes my blood boil. DSPUK
A Mate of mine was made redundant about 8 yrs ago and he earned a bit above 23k - since then he has cleaned shops and offices before they opened - done packing in factories and cleaned rooflights on old building plus loads of other cacky jobs - he has the desire to work at anything but unfortunately he is over 50 and no one want's him. That bloke needs a kick in goolies. - 23k - I would be rolling in it with that. dave

al4x
only other thing I can think of is if he had mortgage protection insurance and a good size mortgage being paid by them but its probably too long a time period

steve_b_wales
A way around the 'refuse a job/lose your benefits, is that they turn up for the job, and, after a few days of being abusive to the employer, gets sacked. Their benefits are not affected. I know a local 'yob' who does this regular.

Ricko
A mate of mine came out of the forces a good few years ago. He'd got married and figured that after doing 3 tours in NI that his luck was up. My mate did all kinds of jobs with unsocial hours, I used to sit up chatting with him after I'd been out lamping whilst he worked the night shift at a 24hr pet. stat. on the A55. He knew he would be better off on the dole but he refused to accept it if he could work. This country has gone to the dogs. I nearly left in 1994 with the first wife for Oz (despite me doing all the paperwork she refused to leave her mother, that's why she is my ex-wife) I quite fancy the border area between France and Spain in the next 5-10 yrs or so. Kes
Until having your benefits cut (due to inability to get or retain a job) is negatively linked to voting, the job shy will have no reason to return to work - they are a niche minority so, unlike shooters, have to be considered as voters, by the 'political parties'. Mungler
Doesn't it make you feel good to pay your taxes It is a form of fraud - he is fit able and qualified to work but chooses not to. Can I choose not to pay my taxes?
Gordon R
Mungler - a man in your profession should know the answer. :) If you don't pay taxes, HMRC will soon be on your case. A relatively simple case to prove. It is a lot harder to prove that someone is deliberately making themselves unemployed or unemployable. Ricko
I suppose that the next question is... Would you inform the government benefit fraud hotline if you knew someone was fraudulently claiming benefit? Diceman
Don't follow connection, must be my age...? Well that fell flat then! 90s thing I think, "I'm Alan Partridge" played by Steve Coogan, on his way home from the radio station he used to drop into the service station to chat to his ex forces Geordie mate who worked there. Reruns regularly on Dave, worth watching!
