sako751sg
Had quite a good September when the water was in spate with some mint grilse with the worm and a nice salmon to the Rapala. Also fished a wee burn for an afternoon and had a grilse, some nice troot and lost a salmon about 8lb.The old fella had a nice grilse from the river and a mix of sea troot and grilse from an even smaller burn but has a cracking run of fish. The burn is lucky if its a rod length in width and its great sport for broonies and the biggger stuff with the worm. Yesterday was the first blast of winter with a baltic wind and some heavy squally showers so went out hoping for the first pheasants and duck/geese of the season. The pheasant walk was about 2-3 miles all in and was hard going due to the old waistline expanding a bit lately.Plenty of birds and some testing ones with the strong wind, and ended up with 8 pheasants,1 cushie and 1 rabbit.Managed to pick everything we dropped and Rab was pretty knackered at the end. After that we picked up some different squeebs and headed away to an old water reservoir which holds a good number of various ducks and plenty geese when they are here. The geese dont usually start using it till Novemberish so was only hoping for a duck or two.The wind was ideal and the rain with it was near horizontal and after about 5 minutes a pair of Widgeon held over.It was pretty dark by now and they were on us quickly going with the wind but the first shot dropped one and on the second the bird lost height and turned in a wide circle.I watched it go about 200 yards and then just collapse into a wood that runs up the march.I put Rab out and he came back with the duck and just as we were going to head up to the trees a honk from the rear got me scrambling for a couple of goose squeebs.I turned round and a huge canada was heading right for us,so i just left the steel 5s in and when he was about 30 yards out,and slighty wide of us i shot the first barrel, which hit him hard so i gave a wee bit more lead and he dropped like a stone at the second.I think he would have came down with the first but wasnt wanting him to make the water.Rab wasnt sure what to make of it as hes used to pinks mostly. After that we worked the woods for about half an hour but couldnt find the other widgeon which was a blow right enough. All in a fine start to the game and fowl season.
