1.2sq km (300 acres) Rough Shoot

Hi everybody.

A friend of mine is lucky enough to own some land by the coast in the South West.

It’s an attractive but challenging setting that’s very hilly in areas, surrounded by some cliffs and deep woodland with a few fields of yellow bristle grass. There is also a house by the large pebbled coast were you can stay. The place is quite private so only a few dog walkers generally roam the beach, who have managed to access it from further up the coast line.

We have just gotten a government grant to build fencing around some of the areas, relocate a public footpath that’s near one end of the grounds and clear some woodland with the aim to make some paths and clear lots of bracken away.

Pheasants inhabit the area quite thickly as it is, so we are confident that if we get some in they will stay local with the help of an ex-gamekeeper and his son that can watch over and help when we are not around. There is also no short supply of rabbits, pigeons and plenty of foxes in the area. Lots of gray squirrel too!

We are planning on building two pens on the ground and getting some of our own pheasants in. The place is too small for driven game and to be honest we aren’t really looking to do that, but we thought it would be perfect for people who want to get away with friends or family and enjoy some remote and challenging surroundings and some rough shooting.

Pheasant shoots can be expensive and not everybody can do it so we wanted to see if people liked the sound of this idea?

Thanks for reading and any ideas/advice is worth its weight in gold :good:

personally i would jump at the chance to be involved with that...but I dont live on the south coast...:lol:

I would rather give my time and effort than cash :good:

Thank you for the reply. I apologise, perhaps I didn’t word it well. We are looking to see if people would be interested in using the place and coming along rather than funding or aiding in its construction etc.

For example perhaps a group fancy coming down for a rough pheasant shoot, or maybe a father and son fancy a camping weekend with some rabbits of pheasant.

very much apreciate the reply and interest, i imagin foxes would be a big issue as there wont always be people there to control their numbers!

Sounds brilliant to me...camping and shooting and BBQ for the bag would be brilliant and if it is close enough to walk down to fish the beach then even better.

Even during the summer of there is fishing and rabbit shooting available then this sounds the ideal holiday for me and the dogs (may even let the girlfriend come as well).

Please let us know more about the location and likely costs.

Anthony

Thanks for all the replies and apologies for the late response.

The place should be up and running hopefully by October this year and work will start at the end of Feb 2012. I will try and get some images for you as soon as I can as it’s a beautiful place. Just needs some work to get maximum potential out of the space down there as the trees and bracken dominate a portion of the land that would be great for shooting.

The location is South Wales along the coast line, about 30 minutes out from Tenby. It’s fairly remote and quite nice and secluded due to the area being surrounded by cliffs. It’s in a ravine so shooting works quite well down there as it doesn’t disturb farms and smaller settlements further in land past the cliffs.

I'm meeting up with the owner next week so I will see if I can get photos and more details with regards to price. I don’t want to tread on his toes as he’s still weighing up the direction of the idea.

Thanks again!

Shotguns, rim- fires and air-rifles would be perfect due to the space. I think large calibre rifles could be a bit tricky as there are public footpaths and bridal paths dotted around the surrounding area.

There is a large rabbit population down there and the pheasants love the long yellow grass in the fields. You can walk through gradually and take shots as they take flight.

Dogs would probably love it down there and if you like fishing I would imagine it would be great.
