Hi Matt,

i use the gym 3 times a week for power and strength training and do all my cv training on my bike or running. I train for between 35mins and 1 hour depending on what im doing in the gym.

I also do a kettle bell class and mixed martial arts training which is a great way of burning fat etc without the bordem of a gym.

i could not just sit about every night after work and do nothing, but most of the country seem too judging by the amount of unhealthy/ fattys i see.

I think its so funny to see someone out of breath at a clay shoot walking between stands..

£30 a month at the local leisure centre, good facilities, and long opening hours. Really can't complain. All manor of equipment from cardio to free weights and everything in between. Large pool, sauna and steam room all included.

£100 for 12 months for my campus gym at university. Student prices are offset by over crowding and strange opening times. Not as well equipped as some other gyms.

I find myself in the gym between 4 and 6 times a week, for about an hour each time. I split muscle group workouts over the week to give everything plenty of rest time. I don't do any cardio at all at the gym because I find it mind numbingly boring, I pound the pavements to cut the fat and get CV fit.

As for benefits, the birds love a six pack (I'm not talking pigeons here) I also find myself feeling much calmer and more relaxed after a good workout. I sleep better at night and don't feel as guilty for drinking the occasional 8 pints.

:good:

I go pretty much every day even if just to use steam, sauna, pool and jacuzzi. I try to mix it up with various classes and routines. Taking it easy at moment as I have a shoulder injury. Fittest I have ever been in my life and half a pound shy of three and a half stone shed since July.

We are in David Lloyd which runs at about 200 quid a month for the four of us, but I certainly get my monies worth.

Body balance tonight which is mix of yoga, tai chi and pilates, **** tastic :)

£37/month (I think, thereabouts anyway).

Use it 3 times a week, about 30 minutes of cardio followed by 30 minutes of stretching. TBH it's all about the stretching for me. I suffer with my back due to work and it tends to be as a result of certain muscle groups being abused and locking up a bit. This affects posture which affects your back musculature, which affects posture and repeat until paralysis!

Lots of proper stretching after warming everything up (hence the 30 minutes cardio) works wonders at keeping me off the osteopaths couch...as well as making it easier to drag my knee sliders across the tarmac at Brands Hatch!

We pay 40 or so a month. That is for the gym and pool, all of the classes, various events, etc, but no courts. We go 2-3 times per week for an hour a clip. We have also been using a personal trainer once a week for the past year or so.

The gym work is just to maintain the metabolic rates we generate during our pt sessions. With a combination of gym and diet, i am down over 2 stone since christmas including 10 percentage points of fat. Is it worth it? What is your health worth? How much exercise do you get during the day? My dad worked as a laborer for 30 yrs and could eat anything he wanted. Once he retired he put on 40 lbs. what are your fitness goals? Running alone will get you into great shape if general fitness is what you want.

Thanks,

Rick

I need to do something fast. My backs going every five minutes and its all down to loosing core strength from being off the tools. Dunno whether I could handle the gym though, I'd rather do some manual work.

Plenty of core strengthening exercises you can do at home on youtube :good: every 6 weeks just change your routine/exercises to keep the muscles ''on their toes'' :good:

Top tip Christpi but I always get side tracked. The core strength of my right spanner has never been better though

If I had the space for a bench I'd be bang on it most nights as I do enjoy throwing the weights around but since the Hernia op I've lost my confidence a bit as its quite easy to aggravate even a year past. The buzz of feeling yourself getting stronger day on day is awesome though.

35 quid a month for my spit and sawdust gym! I train six days a week weights, bags, boxing and sparring keeps me fit and strong for climbing.

I find the gym apart from keeping me fit unloads so much **** after a day at work, training levels me out and makes me more bearable for the Mrs!

Well 8 years ago I Weighed in at 11-12 stone 32inch jeans was fit, running, swimming, throwing javelin, horse riding and circuit training because I was young free and single. I since then I got a job and spent my wage on booze and junk food after drinking sessions. From this I am now 14stone and a 36inch waist in trousers, aka a fat biffa and the smallest amount of exercise leaves me feeling poo and breathless, so frankly am ashamed and want to get myself sorted with dropping at least a stone and a half from my gut and building my abs, arms, pecks to be big and definedand stronger and fitter, I don't mean arnie style but enough to show time and effort is put in and noticeable when wearing short sleeve shirts and t-shirts.

So am looking at what it's going to take to get me there and also looking at what others do to achieve there fitness goals !

Serious hard graft and good diet. Have a look through the Men's Health website, a wealth of information on there.

I wish you all the best, getting a personal trainer to set you up with a program will be money well spent.

The question really is what are you trying to achieve?

Good question.

Whatever it is it any real benefit will be lost within a month or so of stopping (sorry to bring reality into it)

Of course doing something is better than doing nothing, but lifestyle is far more important and relevant [iMO]

If you haven't already, watch The Truth About Exercise, interesting documentary.

Whenever anyone starts out exercising, a lot of them make the same mistake. As has been said on here, you really need a goal to aim at otherwise you will find yourself doing the same old thing every time you go and get bored with it and stop going. If you want my advice, spend a few quid a personal trainer. most will do a discount for a block of 10 essions. If they are any good, they will ask you what you are looking to achieve and build you a programme based around that and what your capabilities are. After 10 sessions, they will have your programme down to a tee and you can either go it alone or continue with them, even if it was for one session a month to tweek your programme.

Going it alone is generally harder as you will never push yourself as hard as a good PT will. I have several routes I run when I'm out by myself but my best times always come when i have sessions with my PT. He is an ex-marine and we do a mix of CV, core strength, kettle bells, cross fit for general all round fitness. I don't look to bulk up but I do aim to be toned, have good core strength and a good level of strength, power and stamina (that's where the cross fit and kettle bells comes in).

I also go to British military fitness twice a week and Iyengar yoga on a sunday morning. I'm 42 and am in the best shape of my life & fitter than I've ever been. The yoga definately helps and would recommend it to anyone who is looking to remain supple. It works you in a totally different way to any of the other fitness stuff I do.

All the best, whatever you decide on.

Doc.

Apologies if I repeat what some have already mentioned, I do what works for me. I like to balance weights (for strength) with c.v ( such as boxercise which I do with my missus, spin (cycling on a static bike in an instructor led class and core stuff like yoga). I am 41 and have started taking my fitness seriously as I've always taken it for granted until i hit 40. I road run for an hour 2-3 times a week which can be heavy on the joints but as far as weight control goes is the best exercise in my opinion. I have a great gym at work so I use that most days and as mentioned I go to the wife's gym for classes at the weekend, but that's more to spend some time with her doing something together. At the end of the day, I do what I enjoy, if you don't then you won't last for long. good luck on your fitness journey (oh, I also have a set of basic dumbells at home and do a full upper body workout in about 20 mins).

I pay £38 a month and that gives me access to the Gym swimming pool steam and sauna and fitness classes. I use the gym 4 times a week and for muscle building and strength steam and sauna once a week mainly but if I get time maybe twice.

Its helped me in a couple of ways not only that Im getting fitter but my sleeping is much better I dont wake up in the middle of the night anymore, I also have cut down on foods that are unhealthy and had no Alcoholic drinks in eight weeks until tomorrow .

I take my iPod with me and listen to tunes that get me moving and determined.
