Walkers crisps! That's nothing...

Optrex Actimist Eye Spray….

Well you have probably heard of folks calculating the price of printer ink by the gallon, £1000-£4,000!

Having spent £14.00 on Optrex Actimist Eye Spray I was disappointed to find that it just made my tired, itchy eyes sticky but no less irritated.

I got even more irritated when I read the ingredients and got out my calculator.

Apparently my £14.00 bottle contains 10ml of product so a whole litre of the product would cost £1400

Each 1ml contains

Soy Lectin 10 mg

Sodium Chloride 8 mg

Ethanol 8mg

Phenoxyethanol 5mg

Vitamin A Palmitate 0.25mg

Vitamin E 0.02mg

The rest is Purified Water.

Totting that up I get 31.27 mg of ingredients in water. Well, 1 ml ( millilitre, or thousandth of a litre) weighs a whole gram so my 31.27 mg is just 3% of the contents of the bottle.

So with the product costing £1400 a litre and the active ingredients only constituting 3.127% of the product then the active ingredients are being charged at a whopping £ 44,771 a litre or £203,598 a gallon!

So what are these active ingredients?

Soy Lectin – a simple plant extract.

Sodium Chloride – common salt.

Ethanol – plain old alcohol.

Phenoxyethanol – a common ingredient in sunscreens and the like.

Vitamin A Palmitate – a derivative of plain old vitamin A.

Vitamin E – pretty self explanatory too, Vitamin E is a common preservative by the way.

So nothing very exciting there then.

Welcome to another example of Rip-Off Britain, £ 203,598 a gallon for common ingredients for itchy eyes that didn’t really work for me.

Hope it works for you..

Why hasn't anyone spoken up for the old straight or cut-throat razor yet? My Grandad swears he only ever had one razor in his life which he used with Imperial Leather soap and a badger brush made from a badger he trapped as a kid. Just the thought of that smell of Imperial Leather makes me see him clear as day.

right i,m gonna try a safety razor

can some one recommend one to me , and where to buy from , not internet though prefer to shop maybe boots , superdrug, supermarket etc.

also which blades

thanks

High street shops are only going to sell cheap own brand rubbish... there isn't a market for them, most people just reach for the fusions or the bics..

You need a shaving specialist like shaving shack.. follow the link above i gave for Mungler and then look at the razors... the Merkur 34c was voted razor of the year, that's why I bought one... very happy with choice

Here ya go.. but if a fusion is stretching the budget, I can't see the initial outlay on this working?

http://www.shaving-s...ty-classic.html

it was,nt so much the outlay as conveiniance , i,ve been looking and trying other disposibles for a while , but keep going back to fusion and proglide , these looked half decent for a quid LOL :lookaround: , how wrong.

i,m fed up of paying out £20 ish for 4 razors , sometimes i only get one or two good shaves from each before there blunt.

i think gillette do it on purpose , as i used to get a good shave from sensor excel and mach 3 , but now they just cut me up :cry1:

my first blade was feather as i was lead to believe they were the sharpest... beautiful shaves and only very minor nicks down more to technique than anything. Switched to the free Merkur blade that came with my razor and it was dragging, nicking & uncomfortable so binned it half way through shave and went back to a new feather..

Your skin will feel sore afterwards for a few days, possibly longer... get a good after shave balm and some decent moisturiser. I found king of Shaves ultimate coconut balm in tesco on offer... lovely... and follow that up with lashings of nivea for men moisturiser.. this will stop as your skin gets used to it

The burn/rash/nicks thing seems to be more about prep and skin care thatn ANYTHING else... check out some of the youtube vids on the subject..

Had an uncle whose beard - well his nickname was blue beard. He had a razor blade (just the one) which he used to sharpen on the inside of a 1/2 pint sleeve glass.

On the grounds that he would have appreciatd the joke, everyone said he should have stuck with the blade instead of trying a saw. Not quite true as he slipped on them while cutting up a pile of elm logs and the chain saw took him across the face.

This has got to be a contender for the best researched post of the year. Love it!

The boots own brand plastic safety razor ain't bad - I think that's what Teal said he had a go at. It's light weight and takes double edged razor blades, so it does the job.

The Merkul is excellent but the weight and unwieldyness of it takes some getting used to.

I haven't scored or nicked myself yet - take time, shave in the shower under steam and lather up properly (ooerrr)

I haven't read all the post but I am a bit of a shaving snob, either a straight razor or a good double edged safety for me. The best thing i ever got, in fact the 2 best things, that made shaving a pleasure were a good brush and proper shaving soap, Taylor of old bond street is where I get it from off the net. Last ages and is the stuff is amazing, no razor burn, no red bits, effortless and they smell nice. About 7 quid a tub. Can't recommend it enough, no one goes back once they have tried it.

I think they do mini ones to try out as well. The shop is quite interesting to visit if your around that part of the world.

Not an employee or anything, just impressed.

Thought I'd better have a look at this thread,if nothing more than to see how a thread about razorblades had made 6 pages!

Have a shaving brush(can't remember make)but is made by a shaving brush manufacturer which has Royal approval;razor is a Gillette Turbo thingy. As long as I shave every day it does the biz.

After following this post I bought a Edwin Jagger Barley Chrome DE razor and a selection of 60 blades to try best thing I ever did, I already used a shave brush and cream for years so only needed the proper razor to complete the set.

On Holliday last week in Turkey had a barber shop shave with a straight razor shavette, cracking shave and no irritation.

So I bought one online and it turned up today put a miraki blade in and away we go, bloody hell nearly had me chin off. Took my time after that and ended up with a good result, still got some of my nose and lips and smooth skin.

Worth a try for them into the De shaving thing.

Just the thought of dragging a sharp blade over me throat in the morning gives me the willies. Had a beard for the past fourty odd years, ever since my first headteacher mistook me for one of the sixth formers (I used to be a teacher by the way). You've got hair round it so you can talk like one. It's a good way of storing some of your breakfast for a quick snack later on in the day.

Occasionally shave it off during the summer if it's hot. Frightens the heck out of the other golf club members. My beard used to be big and bushy. Everyone knows me as Uncle Albert up there. :smartass: :smartass:

I've been using there stuff for a few years now, also tried Trufitt&Hill but Taylor's is cheaper and better. The Rose shave cream is nice and the Sandlewood aftershave lotion and tube of balm works a treat.

Top quality at sensible prices.

Well a week and a bit of DE shaving and I'm impressed!! at first it feels a little weird, quite heavy and cautious, but within a few days it's all so natural and easy, no need to worry about lopping an ear off, in fact not really different to using a Mach 3

Highly recommended!!

Last time I bought Mach3 blades I got a load from Germany on Ebay. Including shipping, way cheaper than I could buy them in the UK.

I use a double edged razor too now, though just to trim the edges of my beard at the moment. Good fun! Didn't cut myself at all the first few times, then got a bit cocky and did, then slowed down again and not cut myself since. (Famous last words!)

Merkur razor blades are not great, Derby blades are OK, and I'm going to try Feather blades next time. (Got a sample pack from Shaving Shack). Proraso shaving creams are great - smell lovely, about £4 a pot, make a good lather, last a while...
