fenboy
I managed my first ever Jay with a airgun today , had one or two with the shotgun over the years but never with a airgun as they are perhaps the ultimate quarry to get close enough to for airgun shooting . This one was busy turning over some pea stubble when I saw him Typically when I slowly raised the gun it spotted me and took flight, unbelievably it decided to land in the bottom branches of a tree around 40-45 yards away where I could just see its head / neck. With almost windless conditions and having checked the zero of the gun yesterday I was confident of taking a shot at that range once again I raised the gun very slowly and managed to settle the cross hairs on its neck (its head was now hidden by some leafs ) I sent the pellet on its way and was rewarded with a satisfying twack and the jay dropped out of the tree without a twitch. When i retrieved the bird it had a deformed beak with the top and bottom crossing over and the bottom half missing a little bit . steve_b_wales
I shot my 4th Jay recently (probably only even seen a dozen) in over 38 years of shooting, using a 12g. The wing feathers are excellent for fly tying. Well done on getting the Jay.

JDog
Good one. I have seen upwards of 30 jays in the last two weeks. It is the best time to see them as they are flying out of their natural territory to look for acorns.

FOXHUNTER1
Brilliant . As you say they are extremely difficult to get near with a shotgun never mind an air rifle. In 28 years of shooting I've only had about 6.
