Yes it was. A pump that had been isolated, the paper work ( work order) had been filed as complete. The pump had been reinstated. Permission from senior management could have prevented the catastrophe but nobody dare take responsibility due to loosing production.

Greed killed all those people, very sad. Those that did survive thought they were jumping to a certain death from what they were informed .

H&S laws changed dramatically from that incident.

A good friend who I have known forever was working in the North Sea at the time (not on Piper Alpha) it is his view that H & S whatever the rules are will never be any good as long as there is the American mentality of "get yer *** into gear and get it done "

He absolutely detests BP and Shell management and knew more than one good man who was killed in single incidents as a result of gung ho attitudes. He always said it would happen again and what came along .............Deep Water Horizon.

As an aside the father of one of the victims a young lad of around 25 who was killed on Piper Alpha, (lived near us) was talking to his cronies (what few he had) in the local pub and complained he would have to wait months for any compensation because his sons remains were never found. Which when he got whatever it was peed it up the wall in around 3 years. Then joined his son in Valhalla (or maybe not).

Remember the Piper Alpha tragedy clearly, also remember a nearby satellite rig would not stop pumping oil into Piper Alpha until the OIM had spoken to the rig management in Aberdeen. In the early hours of the morning. May not have made a difference but absolute stupidity to add fuel to an out of control situation.

Bless all the victims.

seen and heard of many more potential Piper Alpha type accidents in recent times and all that was missing was a source of ignition!! sadly it will happen again as the memories errode of serious accidents people start to relax!! and forget how dangerous oil and gas exploration and production is :(

I watched the program,

I for one am guilty of ignorance to these sad events, these people are true hero's,

its a shame we tend to forget so quickly,

Maybe the honours list should recognise proper folk,

Not tennis players-actors-etc..

Bta

+1 to that ! Sports people deserve no awards.
