wildfowler.250
Needing opinions on a small ish 4x4. I was thinking of looking at a grand vitara. I need something primarily for getting from the main road down muddy, snowy, icy tracks to get to to wildfowling car parks ect,(maybe odd bit of lamping) but also has to be ok on the roads. Need the usual boot space for a dog box and hide gear ect. What is the above car like? I thought about a jimny but they are a bit poofy and small and also terrible on the roads apparently,(although good on the road). Appreciate any tips or suggestions. Basically I need something that can handle a but of mud or snow but I'm not doing regular 'proper' offroading if that makes sense? I've been past my test 5 years so hopefully insurance wont be too bad! Thanks in advance
RED BEARD
it may not be small, but what about an old tax exempt land rover? no tax to pay and dead cheap classic insurance.
wildfowler.250
Could be an idea but if I'm running about in it all the time that'll probably guzzle fuel? Thanks for the reply!
RED BEARD
if you do a lot of mileage it might work out expensive, but as a second car it would be fine.
chrispti
Nothing poofy about jimnys, its not terrible on the road at all, not been stuck off road yet either... At under £200 insurance and £135 road tax per year, its a great option for a second/shooting car. Edited July 13, 2013 by chrispti

archiebald
What bout normal vitara? I love mine once you fold the seats down theres plenty of space. Nice and light and farmers dont mind me driving on there land because of this. Never been stuck and they are nice and quiet while out lamping. Have a landy s3 too but prefer my vit! HDAV
RAV4 with rear seats out comfy drive, ok on fuel and very reliable. Or a Honda C-RV if mileage limited, go for a petrol one

leadbreakfast
How about the old Sj had the jimnys but these are more fun. They are not very good on road but you get used to it Bit like driving a tractor lol

Bleeh
Jimny, now had mine 3 ears, its ok to drive on road, and off road its good too The only problem is people keep pulling you over and asking you to do them a perm.
southeastpete
I looked at subaru outbacks and ended up with a forester. Both are all wheel drive, good off and on road. For the kind of tracks you are talking about it would be fine.

four-wheel-drive
I have got a vitara 4u but I have to admit that they do look a bit girlie unless you want to lift them and put big chunky tyres on it I think you should go with a grand vitara diesel that is what I would go for if I was getting another one. wildfowler.250
Thanks for all the feedback. So a LOT of suggestions for vitara/grand vitara and jimny. Is there anything in particular is should look out for when looking at these cars? I'll probably put some winter tyres on it so it hopefully wont look too gay Maybe some bull bars actually this is pretty sweet! http://offroad-armory.com/images/BIG%20IMAGES/JIMNY-LG.gif
HDAV
Jimny tiny, terrible fuel economy ESP when modded! Impressive off road! Useless on road
wildfowler.250
Well I was quite keen on the jimny or vitara. Can't really think of much else that's similar. Someone I know has one and rates it offroad and said its poor on road as you mentioned. I've seen one that's been raises a few inches..is that best avoided?
