studley
My dad is off on a business trip to LA next week so it got me thinking, what can he buy from somewhere like Cabela's/any shooting hunting/fishing/shop out there that is going to be cheaper than over here? Has anyone bought rifle scopes over there and found any real discount vs over here? I dont think customs and excise will come into the equation as any items would be gift in hand luggage and classed as a gift- please inform me if you know otherwise? If anyone has any experience buying from the USA and their relative prices compared to the UK I'd be interested to hear. Alas don't think he'll be able to bring me a .50 CAL, but I don't think the TSA will be strip searching the old man for carrying a scope? Let me know your thoughts! Blunderbuss
I stuffed a couple of suitcases with gear from Cabelas just over a year ago. Mostly reloading gear but some big bulky kit including a Rock Chucker press, a charge-master, case trimmer and loads of cleaning kit, bore snakes, targets etc. My cases were opened and searched by TSA (they left a note) no dramas with anything I bought. Everything is a lot cheaper over there. Example price difference, I paid about $350 for the RCBS chargemaster combo. It's between £400-£500 here depending on where you buy. phaedra1106
Scopes are generally a lot cheaper, you can save around 25 to 40% if you do some looking around, buying in Cabelas etc. will still be cheaper than here but they aren't as cheap as the bigger online specialists like Scopes4u etc. The only scopes that aren't allowed to be brought back without an export license are those specifically classed as military use or with enhanced vision capabilities so your average Leupold, Swaro etc. are fine. As an example my Sightron SIII 8-32x56 was over £250 cheaper in the US. There's a limit on the amount of Duty Free goods, including "gifts" that you can bring in from the USA to the UK of £390, anything over this is liable for import duty and VAT where appropriate. studley
Cheers guys, I had a look at cabela's optics prices, so much cheaper than sportsman listed prices. I'm sure with some cash bargaining I could end up with a great scope, seems to be some good deals on Swarovski z3's, now to the optics page to get some reviews
Paddy Galore!
i'd really like a browning pump action shotgun, they don't send them over here anymore what would be the odds of importing one myself do you guys think?
oscarsdad
I don't think there is a cabalas anywhere near LA - California don't really like hunting! I would be interested if you find one though as I will be there in a few weeks.

Thanks for that.

kent
I should buy what you cannot get here, not what you can buy there cheaper- unless you are over there 5 or 6 times a year that is. I got some first edition books signed by the American authors and there is no duty on books

kiffy
my brother has a palce in florida and the last twice hes gone ive ordered from cabelas and had delivered to his house. first time i bought new waders, cabelas will deliver to the uk but they where almost a hundred quid more.. not far off doubling the price. second time i had a few calls, i had a double nasty 2 kit for about £12 over here their about £30 just for the call and with cabelas i had a wildfowling dvd, a cd on calling and a little electronic gadget. i also bought some long sleve camo tshirts, im a little bit on the pum side so find them not only difficult to get here but expensive i had some lovely ones from cbaelas for about a tenner each hes off again in march so ill be looking for more for himn to bring back Edited January 14, 2014 by kiffy
