Surprise,Surprise, More Rain

We could not shoot Friday so we were out at 08.00 before the main flocks were out of roost in the rain again, we headed to the rape again but we knew that there were a number of shoots operating today and that could be an advantage to our quest. We stopped and whatched a known flight line out of roost straight to the trees next to the rape . Went to see the farmer and he said that he had seen birds on the field late in the afternoon on Friday .So we chose a comfortable position with a wood and the wind behind us so we could shelter from the wind if the rain started to get heavy. The normal twelve defrosted birds two on the magnet and ten on spikes , the first bird in went straight into the kill zone . The first few shots lifted and good number of birds out of the adjoining trees and hedges and they decoyed well . It went a bit quiet after the first hour then the game shoots started and stirred it all up again . The majority of the birds tried to pass to our right and not decoy cleanly so we kept the pattern as it was and moved the hide so they came straight infront of us. You know when your decoys are working well when they come in from a great height just like stones. We had a number of showers and the field was like a swamp but they kept coming to dark. We move the birds to some hard standing to photograph and bag up to stop them getting soaking wet . We picked up one hundred and seventy seven, so it was a cracking day again and well worth getting wet for.

Another lucky, flukey, by chance, fortuitous and undeserved encounter with a few unfortunate pigeons South of Birmingham. You must have shot 50 by the time I had finished reading the 'Telegraph' in bed. That's dedication for you - yes I have never failed to read the Telegraph from cover to cover at the weekend.

Sorry I forgot to ask. Were the pigeons on the rape field feeding on rape or on acorns around the edge?

Any good stories in the Telegraph? We were shooting over a rape field some of the birds were empty others had acorns and chestnuts in them.

Another cracking day PC. Do you hold the PW record for the most pigeons shot ?

To by honest I did not know that we were in a competition. I would not be sure where I feature in any list as I shoot with another shooter DB and we share a hide and shoot in turn so one shooter would have the same bag if we were solo. I just enjoy the craic.
