blowin
I have moles at the end of the garden now and then and catch them with scissor traps. However, I've not been out there much for the last month or so due to the weather. Anyway, when I did wander out last week, I was a bit shocked to see that loads of new holes – about an inch and a half across and linked by tunnels just under the surface – had appeared. They had no molehill around the top which is why I never noticed them from the house but there are probably 50 of the darned things. Before I call the pest control people, does anyone have any ideas what's doing this and if there's anything effective to deal with it that I can get over the counter? Thanks
Rim Fire
It could still be moles and the weather has washed the soil away there is the same holes in a field where i walk my dog and that is full of moles
FalconFN
Maybe voles or mice? Seem to be too many holes though.
kent
Try a .338 lapua into the holes, works for some I should go with some type of vole, your ground is a lot drier than mine, moles here have to use scuba gear
FarmerSim
Mice or voles would be my guess too. As Falcon said, above, there are a few of them though, which seems a little strange - is the ground really stony, and they are struggling to get a decent depth for their nests? 39TDS
You sure it isn't jays or squirrels digging their acorns back up. Mice don't usually make so many holes.

pbutd
Field voles.Supposed to be getting scarce over the last decade ,but there are quite strong 'pockets' of them in wet areas these last two or three years in Herefordshire.A network of tunnels/holes just below the grass roots is typical. It's what motorway Kestrels will be hunting for most of the time in the winter. mbga9pgf
Caught one over last summer. def. voles, very cute, or so I thought until one of the little beggars decided to turn 2 car coolant pipes into vole nesting...
