aga man
The oppertunity to sly off pigeon shooting presented itself ths afternoon if only for a short session. I was hoping to head to some recent vined pea stubble which had a fair few woodies on, and would have been nice easy access. I contacted the farmer and he persuaded me to have a look at some barley which was "sick with pigeons". I headed for the barley field and as i approached sure enough the 20 acre field was littered with woodies. The only problem as always was the pigeons were hitting the crop right in the centre of the field on two laid patches. Although i had the dog with me i was not happy to shoot in the centre of the field as the crop there was very dense and it was obvious i would lose birds and cause further damage to the crop. Instead i opted for one side of the field where the crop had struggled and was thin and patchy, but had greenhouses to my left. The pigeon wasn't interested in feeding here but was perfect to use the dog for retreives, using a desert net hide i was able to intercept a flightline and using a magnet with dead birds persuaded the pigeons to fly over me. I set up at 2.15pm and had some very enjoyable flightline sport until 5.40pm when i had to pack up. I shot 49 birds and picked up 42 the birds i didn't pick fell in the neighbours wheat and i didn't send the dog in there. I shot the fightline with cheddite 28 trap loads which did the job very with some very satisfying high birds. Once again the numbers of pigeons was unreal and i let a lot of young birds pass by. There's no doubt some bumper bags will be taken this harvest, this field however is becoming a pain and i will be glad when it's gone! I checked the pea stubbles on the way home and pigeon were there too Edited June 28, 2014 by aga man

marsh man
bear with it mate, i asure you there's loads of woodies about. Hi aga man.....I don't think we have got as many as you have on your barley, but the field I went on today was the forth time I have shot it and each time I have had a few more than last time , today I picked up 48 but I started at three due to the rain and shot my last pigeon at 7.30 , I am not a huge fan of the magnet but today it certainly earned its keep , pulled them in a treat and gave some good testing shots . now start getting more young uns now but we have got several fields knocked about now after yesterdays storms where 3miles away from where I was today had 87mil of rain and hail and had to get the inshore lifeboat to ferry people from there flooded streets and houses . We have taken over a hundred birds off this field now in three visits. A ton bag would be easy on here but half the bag would be lost, the shooting is not affecting the feeding birds, the number is growing daily. My first photo did not do it justice half the birds had already gone in the photo. We hope to get a good bag off the stuble, but the farmer says rape will be drilled asap so we have to be quick. The strongest flightlines come from the town of Hull. 87mil of rain that's shocking :o

motty
I tried to get permission on a field of laid barley yesterday. When I looked there was well over 1000 birds on there, with many more arriving. Couldn't get hold of the farmer, though. That's a nice bag. Can't believe you were only using clay loads - everyone knows you need 32gram 5 or 6 to kill pigeons.

You say you need 32 grams of 5 or 6 shot to kill pigeons but yesterday in another thread on the forum you said, and I quote. "You believe a larger shot size is needed, but that is not correct. Buy some 7 or 7.5 and use them on a good day. You'll soon see they are more than capable of killing pigeons at any sensible range." Which one is it???
