Got my list of locations to live/work next year

Some of you may know, that I am at uni and part of my course involves a placement year. Luckly enough, I am one of the few has managed to get one and have joined BAE system in finance. Now I have just been given a list of locations to choose from! I live in Ramsgate, the most SE tip of Kent. I would prefer to do finanical accounting so that has narrowed my list down to:

Warton (near blackpool)

Portsmouth

Glasgow (in...scotland)

so either way I am looking at a lengthy journey home, the nearest to me is Farnborough which just outside london by Guilford, but that is more project accounting based.

Now My decision is where do I go? My salary is the same know matter where I go, so its really down to preference. Now obviously, shooting opportunity will come into it but definately not a deciding factor! So what I would love is a objective and serious opinions from you guys esp those who live near the relevant area's.

Also have Marham (Norfolk), Brough (E. Yorkshire) and as mentioned earlier Farborough but these are all project accounting based and not as good as the above three. Just thought I would ask everyone for insider knowldege on the area's as I have only be to blackpool for a job interview and norfolk when very young, the rest of my life not been past london, except through wales on the way to Ireland.

My choice would be Portsmouth too.

Glasgow too far and too cold (although I hear it's alot cheaper to live up there (until you factor in the central heating and waterproofs you'll have to buy.

Blackpool ok if you like fairground rides and stag do's in every bar,

Marham's big downside is that it is in Norfolk. I cannot stress enough that Norfolk is full of very, very strange people and probably best avoided.

I'd actually say go for Glasgow. It's probably better for nightlife than the other two and is going to be way less up its own **** than Farnbrough. The last time I was seriously drunk in Farnbrough, I got some very haughty looks from the local... Mind you, I get that a lot after a night on Jose's finest...

It has to be Portsmouth, if you like lively night life and reasonable weather.

Avoid Scotland like the plague, far too many Jocks there, also abysmal weather.

Cat.

Pompey for munters

Scotland for superb shooting and wonderful weather(E.coast only)

ALL Scotland is Wonderful not JUST the east side

There ARE a few places to steer clear of but when not working your most likely to be outside the cities anyway

I find the south west coast and the north east coast of Scotland offers the best FISHING but the land between can take your breath away

Scottish by Nature but English by luck

Still i am kind of lucky as i am almost classed as being in between the 2 so i can visit Scotland anytime i guess

LG

Hi Dan

Im a northerner in the south, and have seen most of the UK.

Blackpool is like Margate (no further info needed).

South/West gets rough and generally not much happening as regards country sports.

Scotland...the land of drinkers, bad weather, and shooting stuff.

It really depends what you want.

Cheers

Pete

Glasgow - great night life. pretty good motorway system. crapweather. city to some of the most deprived areas of the uk.

Blackpool - **** weather. pubs are full of annoying stag/hen parties. but the pleasure beach rides are bloody excellent

Portsmouth - the only good thing i could say about the place was the weather is better than what im used to. but there again, ur a southerner and used to good weather.

Norfolk - oiiiiiii wookie, i was born there! errr..... ok, enough said.

to be honest, i reckon the yorkshire one is best for shooting.

As you may know, Ive recently got a position with BAE myself. When checking out our resources online, it turns out we have airfields at a number of sights that do "hopper flights". farnborough is one such sight, and i believe (from word of mouth and not from website) that there's a bae airfield south of blackpool. There's always the option of staying in blackpool during the week and flying home in the weekend. I'll warn you now that wherever you go, you'll probably end up running all over the country training and having meetings and the like. (luckily you get a lovely green amex card with which the company will pay your traveling expences)

Either way the choice is yours

Go for Scotland buddy. Get yourself some deer stalking if you're up there in season, and enjoy the vast countryside. Better than some chavvy town, filled mainly with little t**** that want to fight you when you're down the pub! Even without shooting, you can get out of town a lot more easily

I think they all have their good points and not so good points if you know what I mean. I have spent time in all three of the main choices and beleive it or not, my vote would be for Glasgow. l wouldnt rule out Farnborough either as its well situated from both your home and other local opportunities.

Warton is adjacent to the mighty Ribble estuary, home to more wintering wigeon than anywhere else in the UK. Also stuffed full of Pinks, teal, pintail etc, wildfowling heaven except I think the clubs are a closed shop.

Brough is adjacent to the mighty Humber estuary (my patch), but the 'fowling is nowhere near the same league as the Ribble, but at least you can get in a club, good numbers of greylags and canada's on occasion, ducks variable, teal, wigeon and mallard in that order of abundance. East Yorkshire is a vastly under rated area for shooting, plenty of cheap and not si cheap game syndicates , also the occasional woodpigeon has been known to reside in this fair county.

Nice bit of fence sitting there AXE!

Scotland is very very nice but not in the built up bits! Too many deep fried mars bars and jellys!

Go for Pompy, I hear all the nice boys like a sailor...................

and i bet all you lot south of the border still believe we go hunting haggis too!!

no one eats deep fried mars bars anymore(there wasnt much interest in them anyway!!)

built up bits?? so what are you saying about london, manchester etc then snakebite?

i am not dissagreing with you there are some right **** holes but i think most places have areas we would avoid, but travel 20mins from the city centre and its beautiful, and i aint that keen on glasgow either!!

thanks guys, I only own an air rifle, and I doubt I could apply and be granted my SGC while living in rented accomadation and moving back home to kent after a year! One of the guys who works for BAE actually shoots on site on friday afternoons as obviously they have these huge bases which you need security clearance to go on, so only employees could pheasably shoot on them:)

Are you honestly saying that Glasgow is any worse than Portsmouth or Blackpool? Have you been to all of them recently or even at all? I have and beleive me, they all have areas you don't want to visit on your own.
