Puggers
Now, I'm not ashamed to admit that my preferred tipple is a dark rum. I like the non-spiced versions but am not afraid to give them a go in the spirit of trying something new. The kids clubbed together and got me some Kraken for Christmas and I have to say, that for a spiced rum it's absolutely cracking! Any other rum drinkers care to recommend their favourites? There seems to be a bit of a fad around them as a few "rum clubs" and restaurants are springing up, including one in Donny near me.
THE MEK
I was given a bottle of Pussar's Rum by my dad for my birthday, very nice. not really into dark rum but thoroughly enjoyed this
FalconFN
I like lighter rums, the Barbadian Mount Gay (yes I know, terrible name) is my favourite. I prefer it to most single malts.
Gordon R
Mount Gay and Appleton Estate.
Thunderbird
I'm a huge rum fan. For the holy grail Google Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva. I get it from a place called Drinkfinder dot co dot UK. It's the best rum in the world in my opinion. A sipper not a mixer. Other favourites are Pussers Blue (red is good too), Pampero Aniversario, El Dorado 12 or 15 years old. Best mixing rum for me is Mount Gay. Best budget sipper I think probably Lamb's. Oh god there are so many. I could talk about this all day.

Better than Kraken but not miles ahead IMO, I don't think it is worth the extra £10+.
Thunderbird
Really, you surprise me but each to their own. Let it grow on you and you might think differently but perhaps not. Sounds like you may be into the slightly spicier variety. Google the Ministry Of Rum. That's a never ending journey if ever there was one. DazzJo
May favourite is Sailor Jerrys it's absolutely brilliant it's lovely can get it from Asda and Morrisons for about £17 for 70cl
figgy
I bought a bottle of OVD dark rum before Christmas instead of the usual Lambs navy. Different to the norm, a little bit bitter and not as sweet as others I've had.
Thunderbird
I liked Sailor Jerrys until they changed the recipe. It's no longer to my taste.
sandspider
Just tried the kraken today. Very nice. Almost as good as one I had a few weeks ago - can't remember the exact name though - chairman's reserve spiced rum? Think there was more to it than that! Budice
Agree with Thunderbird, since they changed the recipe Sailor Jerry is nowhere near as nice as it used to be
secretagentmole
Walter Hicks, the stuff you can get a hangover from by just looking at the glass it is in! http://www.staustellbreweryshop.co.uk/shop/spirits/125-navy-rum/ 71.4% ABV! Thunderbird
Anyone ever made grog? I make it using Pussers Blue (the strong stuff) with pure lime juice and sugar water. Gorgeous it is. Edited January 10, 2015 by Thunderbird

Thunderbird
Glad you enjoyed it Gordon. Nice to see the rum thread resurrected. I'm still in love with the Diplomatico, but cheap it ain't.

figgy
I have a bottle of Kraken son likes it but i prefer my Dark Rum straight no spices or cola anything.
Danger-Mouse
I tried the Kraken a while back. Unusual but pleasant enough. Wouldn't turn down a bottle but I'd rather drink something more traditional. The Mount Gay is very nice but the best I've drunk is Chairman's Reserve from St Lucia, a lovely sipping rum. Whitebridges
After a day at sea we used a take a few glasses of Woods Old Navy Rum, 57% by vol. Used to spark us up after a tiring day.
Harry Callahan
Just seen this thread. I do love my Rum too! Sailor Jerry or Morgan's Spiced if I'm out with my mates. I also like Havana Club 7. Another thumbs up for Kraken. It's was my birthday last week, and whilst doing my weekly shop in Morrisons a paper wrapped bottle caught my eye. Rumbullion - made by Ableforth... it's a spiced rum. Quick look up on Rumratings.com gave some good reviews and a recommendation to drink neat. Now, I must say there's not many rums I have enjoyed neat, but this on is really nice and I enjoyed every drop! £33 for 70cl @ 42.6% I have a bottle of Mount Gay, too. But It's just OK. Thunderbird
If you can get hold of a bottle of Morgan's Black Spiced (not ordinary Morgan's spiced) that's worth a go. Very good.
Danger-Mouse
For fans of The Kraken . . . it's £25 a litre on Amazon atm.
