Dan.
So the time has come for a new workhorse gun, after many people pointing to as many different guns I have brought it down to 6 brand new guns (wanting a gun with good warranty) 1. Armsan 612W 2. Armsan 612S 3. Hatsan Escort Luxano 4. Hatsan Escort magnum (black synthetic) 5. Hatsan Silver Synthetic (O/U) 6. Baikal 27-EM1 Nickel plated receiver (O/U) Now they are all coming in around £500-ish (bar the standard escort which is about £100 cheaper), they all seem to reviewed well buy anyone that has reviewed them and after holding all of them they all seem to fit and feel pretty good also. Now the question is what should I go for if I'm doing a mixture of shooting (rough, clays plus some wildfowling along the way). Should I just stick with keeping it cheap and cheerful or does something stand miles above the others in this lineup? Anyway I await the replys. Thanks for reading Dan
kennett
Baikal will be bomb proof, and you obviously havnt searched Hatsan on here, they have a very marmite reputation. I will freely admit I made the same mistake as you, bought a bettinsoli diamond brand new, with a 2 year warranty. Boxing day the forend split completely out of the blue, turns out the wood is only covered for a year! Had a few other niggles and felt cheap. Any way just spent £850 on a second hand, but mint miroku mk70 and it is streets ahead, will hold its value and when new came with a 10 year warranty on the action!! So my advice is a buy a second hand good make!
GingerCat
£500 will get you an excellent seconded hand gun, too much choice to list here. It's not like a second hand car and warrantys aren't really that necessary when there's less than 5 main moving parts. If you insist on new then I'd get the Baikal, they are tough and reliable. Providing it fits of course.
figgy
If you want new and are Wildfowling a semi auto would suit you better than a Baikal. Out of your choices it would be the Armsan.
fenboy
To be honest , out of what you have listed I would not have any of them , you may think a warranty is a good idea but you would be better spending the money on a better quality S/H gun where chances are you will not need a warranty anyway , also most decent dealers will offer some warranty on a S/H gun If you do a lot of fowling then a auto is a good idea if its only occasional then a o/u with a 3" chamber would be fine. bostonmick
if you are buying one of the guns you listed because they come with warranty then you cant have much confidence in them.second hand miroku/browning/beretta will be a much better buy and you wont need any warranty.i have beretta's that are over thirty years old and never seen the gunsmiths since the day I bought them.apart from the Baikal I doubt any of the guns on your list would see the same life span. Underdog
Just be sure it fits! Not just"feels nice" !
CaptainBeaky
If you're looking at an auto for wildfowling in your price range, you could do worse than have a look at the Baikal auto (MP153). Couple of folk on here have them and rate them. They're not pretty, but they do the job, and have a good rep for reliability. New might be a bit above your set limit, but you'd get a good second hand one and several slabs of cartridges for your £500.
Dan.
612s brilliant love mine, you won't need the warranty. I was leaning towards the 612W because it looks good and going off what people are saying has the finish and build quality of a much more expensive gun! johnphilip
ok dan so have you held all these guns what one felt right for you, its not about how nice it is , its about how it feels and does it shoot were you are pointing
Dan.
I have just seen the new ATA arms semi auto review and that also looks like a good gun at a sensible price, I think im gonna take a trip to ladds guns and the large sporting gun centre in exeter soon to see what they have in stock! Sco77w
I was leaning towards the 612W because it looks good and going off what people are saying has the finish and build quality of a much more expensive gun! I bought the A612w and loved it, still do. I got a couple of chips in the wood that annoyed me a bit so I sold the woodwork and bought a synthetic stock and forend for it. I use it for PSG so the synthetic stock is more likely to stand upto the knocks without looking tatty. Its never skipped a beat, cant recommend them enough
hawkfanz
just look at the reviews on here about the a612,you wont regret buying one and for a lot less than £500 as well.

Ye I have been looking at the 612 for a long time and they feel better than most also, I think it would be a good starter/ future rough gun tbh Which one of the 612 variant though? I like the look of the wood but the synthetic makes sense for rough shooting :S I also likes the feel of the 612S!
joecash
If you want new and are Wildfowling a semi auto would suit you better than a Baikal. Out of your choices it would be the Armsan. +1 i would put on running shoes as far as the hatstand is concerned - just my opinion from experience better still go to a dealer and look at all 3 and dont be afraid to ask for them to be broken down £400 buys an armsan - baikal lop is quite short
Dan.
thats it I have just spotted an new 612 sythetic for £369 and a 612W for about £400. at £369 that is only £19 more than an escort sythetic which to me seems a bargain! rich1984
Ive recently bought a armsan a612 and i find i prefer it to my silver pigeon, i find myself been to careful with the beretta trying not to mark it where as the armsan is my rough gun and i dont mind chucking it around. Having said that i think its a superb gun for the price, but i do admittedly have limited knoledge

Dan.
Just so everyone knows that might read this thread. I put all the above guns together at one time and chose none, I bought a Winchester select sporting II instead lol Lifting the price a little to between £500-£800 makes a huge difference to the build quality!
