JDog
This particular flock will not decoy, not because they are unreasonably flighty but because all they need to do to get away from a shot is to go to another nearby wood of which there are several or to another field of rape of which there are a number. This morning I was soaked by 7:30 walking the dogs and I settled for a domestic day in the office, ironing, vacuuming, washing the floor etc. Not many but some of you PW members will know the feeling but might be afraid to admit it to the massive. I am very brave indeed. However the wind was just too good. The trees outside were swaying like billy-o and although the forecast was for inclement weather I thought I might just get out for an hour and see if I could flight line some pigeons. I took Jasper and Bounder the Border terrier and off we went all of two miles to the wooded and rape infested area. Needless to say the pigeons were all sitting in the lee of the woods and by the time I was in position I had seen a fair few birds and I had had my first soaking from sleet. Undaunted I hung around and shot the first pigeon coming into my position. The sound of the shot put hundreds out from all around and I had a hectic ten minutes during which time I missed more than I care to admit to. Thereafter I got wet again and shot a few more. For those who have never shot pigeons coming into a wood in a high wind I am afraid that my description will be inadequate, but groups of ten or so would swoop, rise and fall, jink and dive as they came from turbulent air out in the field to calmer air in the lee of the wood. They were difficult, but I would say that wouldn't I? To cut a long and boring story short I shot 22 pigeons and a carrion crow. I did not let Jasper have many retrieves, preferring him to be steady. Bounder brought some back having ensured that they were dead by squeezing them so tightly that their entrails hung out. Bounder also made short work of the carrion. Mentalmac
Nice story Jdog, certainly adds some excitement eh, and makes for good reading. And the shooting sounded good also. Well done, and it sounds like your dogs had fun. I can imagine how difficult it is, i find it hard enough shooting in woods anyhow. Very sporting shooting pigeons in any decent wind so well done , no doubt your cartridge supplyer will be over the moon too . aga man
Brilliant write up JDog, who dares wins and all that! My shooting buddy was out at first light this morning and shot 3 pigeons for 12 shots and he's very competent with a shotgun. Testing birds indeed.
