Awesome Afternoon With My Daughter

Early November last year I went upto the farm to wonder round the phesant and partridge pens as there's a chance of a few rats or squirrels around the feeders this time of year. As the other half was in the allotment my daughter wanted to come with me, so we went in style flask of tea, chocolate buttons and the Mule.

Willow Grace was in pink/blue, myself green/blue, Rupert went for black/white so not really camo in any shape or form. So not really expecting to see or shoot a thing. As we took the headland arond the arable, being in the mule it did not seem to bother the crows. Kept hearing the words "pesky crows" from the passenger seat. Stopped, pulled the RF out its bag chambered a round and nailed the nearest one, much to the delight of my daughter.

Onward to the pen in the middle of the farm, pulled up and walked into the cover crop. I could hear the partridge in such a flap and then something walking along the side of the pen. Stone the crows it was a young fox, had to sneak in....all three of us in our technicolor cammo. Good job the fox was young and dum as I was behind a tree, yet daughter and dog wanted to see so element of SUPRISE had gone. Lucky it was far to interested in an easy meal.

Waited till the fox came back round within 50 yards, using the tree as a rest for my gun, I waited till it was walking away. A well placed round into the back of the head. Stopped in its tracks and my daughter chuffed yet again. Loaded the young vixen into the wagon and off again, down the farm to the wood.

Once there with the very noisy ween singing "old macdonald", pheasants squawking and flying around there was little chance of any vermin with the jungle drums beating. But we still had a wonder into the trees but the odd pigeon leaving cover. Came across a couple of hens and a some cocks in the undergrowth that took to the sky but one. It went for cover but I could see it was only on one leg and it's fate was sealed, if not by me then by some other means. Willow Grace collected our bounty but after inspection a leg broken from shot and looking very green in places.

After buttons and a good old cupper under the trees we headed home sining all the way. Parked the mule then walked back to the allotment daughter told mum all about the afternoon all highlights and extras that kids put into their stories. What a story it was as it changed and evolved all the way home.

I'm so pleased she is not phased by hunting, shooting or fishing and wants to spend time with me and not growing pumpkins but yet is still my girl at the end of the day.

Great post...............my youngest is often found sharing the bivvy for days on end, stood beside me on the peg when game shooting and beside me in the beating line. She's 12 now but has been doing it since she was about 5 and hopefully will continue for many more years.

Can't wait to hear and see your next adventure together.

Luck man!

Been beating with both mine, girl now 15 & now into 1D (boy band) so has no interest any more & son now 12 just started coming out.

The wife won't let me take the kids out with the gun till they are 16 but she'll let me take them beating.

I know I don't understand it either but that's how women think.

That's a shame I bet your lad would enjoy a morning on the marsh.

Brilliant the smile on your little girls face is priceless, that's what it's all about. One of the most memorable days of 14/15 was on a hot summers day, myself, wife and son went to my permission to cut willow for the allotment. We saw Roe deer, fox cubs and watched the Buzzard on the morning before going for our lunch at the local farm shop/cafe.After lunch we went back to finish cutting willow and finished off driving round the margins with the rimmy.During the harvest my wife and son will often come out with me for an evening driving the stubbles.

After the summer I remember considering packing in shooting as my eldest son had lost interest, but my wife persuaded me to carry on saying we are privileged and fortunate to have the freedom to have days like that.
