norfolk dumpling
Uk is overcrowded, we have housing shortages and we have, through our Commonwealth relationships, taken more than our share of immigrants. It looks heartless of a fairly prosperous country to put up the shutters but it would be a huge burden for the UK and as the Govener of the Bank of England said this week, it would be a big drain on our economy. Surely the billions we give in foreign aid is sufficient justification for refusal? Having said as much I feel for the Mediterranean countries and the huge problem these boat people present. Vince Green
The money these people are paying to trafficers is much more than the cost of a plane ticket. If they were genuine asylum seekers they would get on a plane and apply when they got here. Much easier, but also most of them are coming from places where there is no war and they don't have a case for asylum. Thats why they are trying to get smuggled in. Israel pays them and they go home, a true refugee would not do that. The really key point is that it is a migration and its never going to stop, in fact its going to grow simply because its a better life for them in Europe and if it were you in that position you would do the same. Europe can take in some but they cant go on doing it indefinitely, eventually the only option will be to send them back, so lets get to that point quickly and stop all the hand wringers saying what they do. They are criminals trying to enter Europe illegally.

Bobba
immigrant "v" refugee? It matters not how you classify these people. They will tell you what you want to hear or what best suites their circumstances. There are lies, damned lies and statistics. Or more properly put in this case there are lies and damned lies which become statistics. One news clip showed an African lady screaming at the camera to know why she had been stopped leaving as it was her right to go to Europe! This sums it up for me. I have come to the view that what we are witnessing is just the begining and nobody, including me, has any idea how to stop it at source.
secretagentmole
whilst I have sympathy for their plight ( we have not exactly helped stabalize their countriess have we) I wonder why they choose to travel right through Europe to get to us? geordieh
In the interviews I have watched they are talking about fleeing war, persecution and harm. I guess the truth is somewhere in the middle between the interviews you watch and the ones I watched. Nevertheless, the insistence of the media and a certain proportion of the population calling all these people migrants could be perceived as indicative of the existence of an agenda from their part...I don't care what you call them I don't care what happens to them, not my problem.By letting them into this country they become my problem, patrol the three mile limit off Libya and other African countries sink the boats and put them back ashore

It will take far more than completing a quick goggle search for immigration statistics or whatever your social worker performed on your behalf to convince anyone that your wild conjectures are based on any actual statistics. I deal with actual numbers nearly on a daily basis so I know what you are full of, pootongue. You make a very bold claim that the vast majority of people coming to Europe from Asia, Africa and elsewhere are immigrants who are after financial gains in our continent. You seem to be very sure about it. I asked to see where you base your claim, and you gave no answer, other than asking me who I voted for. It is you who is evading the issue at hand, trying to divert the conversation. I say that most people who risk life and limb to reach Europe are not doing so because they want to take jobs and claim benefits in this country, scaring at the same time the orange people of Essex, but are fleeing war, persecution and abuse. I answered to KW that most likely the truth is somewhere between the interviews he he is watching and the ones I did. If you would like to demonstrate otherwise, now is the time, and here is the place... You keep asking me about my vote. Well, pootongue, votes are secret for a reason. It is none of your business who I voted for, and no matter how loud you howl, it will remain so. Yet more inane ramblings and wriggling. You're becoming very predictable...and very boring. Your total inability to answer ANY question put to you, whilst always trying to divert attention from your obvious shortcomings is tedious in the extreme. Conversation and debate is a two way street...it seems you haven't grasped that simple concept yet. Oh, and yes I'm proud to be a British subject. A feeling you will never know, and couldn't possibly understand.

It's obvious you're upset, which is most understandable. The Govenor of the Bank of England coming out and saying what UKIP have been saying all along must be very distressing. No doubt there'll be claims he is now a racist also for telling it as it is. Paying someone the going rate could be devastating on ones wallet. Our government has successfully allowed our national health service to morph into an international health service, and instituted an international benefits system........no one is starving! We have charity food banks to stop all that! No youngsters really want a house or a job cos they can always stay at home and be looked after by the bank of mum and dad! No one is dying waiting for an appointment with a GP, specialist or at hospital!........as you can always call in at one of the A&E depts that haven't been closed, and after a short wait of a mere four to six hours (if your lucky) you can feel the philanthropist when you are told your operation has had to be cancelled for the umpteenth time or your allocated bed has been taken (blocked) by someone who needs to stay in hospital to receive social care or has been given to a more urgent/deserving case! And of course you Should never worry about getting life prolonging drugs....the experts at NICE will evaluate you case individually and assuming of course the drugs offer value for money in how long you life will be extended by! and cheap enough to remain within budget! Gordon R
I despair of many well intentioned people who say let them in. Is there anyone in their right mind who thinks we could let in 5 million, 10 million, 20 million. When pushed, many would agree there has to be a limit, but seem unable to quantify it. Some appear on TV bleating about "there must be something we could do". Unless we have any complete fruit loops, I think it fair to say there should be a limit. What the debate is about, is "how many?". I believe we have let enough in already. If we let in another 20,00, they will be followed by another 20,000 and another. Rewulf
I concur. Just a small observation, if I may. We should not refer to these people as 'migrants'. Most of them are refugees as they are fleeing war and persecution. there is a huge semantic difference, and I suspect the mass media opted to use the former as opposed to the latter (which is the correct term) in order to make refusing these people easier. I particularly felt sorry for the 8 month pregnant Nigerian woman who got off Bulwark after being rescued from her rubber dinghy. She must have been terrified for her life to undertake the hazardous crossing, leaving her 10 year old daughter behind in Nigeria. Obviously crossing from Nigeria to Libya was the safest possible route to safety for her, thence on to Europe where her new child will be born an EU citizen. Then she may be able to pick up the pieces of her shattered life and perhaps be reunited with her long lost daughter, and husband and god knows how many other kids and relatives that may or may not belong to her. So which was easier? Finding a safe area of Nigeria (if she was in any danger to start with) or trekking thousands of miles to a war torn country then chucking your self into an inflatable raft hoping (knowing )someone will pick you up? And as for them being refugees, don't you think they look a bit well dressed for someone who's come from a war torn country, not to mention the thousands of £££ they've paid for the passage ?? They're immigrants and that's the top and bottom of it, they want to come here and live a life of benefits, paid for by us. If the do gooders want them here then YOU pay for them and put them in YOUR spare bedroom, don't get telling me what I should be doing about something that concerns neither YOU or I. If their country's so bad then stop breeding, that way the kids won't starve to death. Who in their right mind would keep having kids knowing the last batch starved to death, I ask you ? We are not comparable for a number of reasons but some key facts are omitted in these discussions. Firstly 1 in 4 people in Australia were born overseas, secondly Australia has a immigration rate per capita that vastly exceeds ours and thirdly more than half the population are not happy with the system and want to close the borders to all new migrants. Australia isn't perfect. It's also worth noting that having money do sent protect you from war, suggesting someone's clothes look to good is a rather naive statement. And Fisherman Mike, come on man, is it being a fascist not wanting this country flooded with economic migrants ? There is enough to deal with now, besides the billions we spend on foreign aid as it it is. Its not a matter of being xenophobic or racist, its a matter of economics, can we afford it? No ,we are promised austerity,so let that mean taking on less migrants who, lets face it ,have little to no skills, cant speak English, and will further drain the system. Also, a lot of them are from radical Islamic states, who we are told are a major security threat. Whats wrong with not wanting that?
