New clay gun: low-mid gun or upper end?

Hi all

Game Fair coming up so perfect timing as I'm in the market for a new gun. A couple of questions with your views of I may?

New or used? I have a budget of up to £5k. I can't decide on new or used. I don't really know how to assess a used gun properly apart from a tight action but the savings can be really good. A second hand DT10 can be had for £3k but then I think a new B725 could make more sense. I current shoot a Beretta Silver Pigeon 1 but it is starting to go a little loose - I must have banged 10,000 through it so no real surprise. Easily serviced though.

As this one will solely be for clays, mostly Sporting, I could stretch to a DT11 which really tickles my fancy. They seem to be very durable. But anyone have any experience with Zoli??

So many choices available to you in your budget and some really great guns too, but if you have not already done so take a look at Caesar Guerini, you get an awful lot of gun for your money.

I just got myself a CG Invictus Ascent and it is a brilliant thing, but the most important thing is what suits you and what will make you feel good. It will also leave you plenty of change in your budget to buy several thousand good carts too.

If you go down the Zoli route be prepared to lose a lot of your money should you not get on with it and want to move it on.

One that fits is the obvious answer.

To answer your question I would buy new over second hand for the same reason as you as you never know how much work it has done.

Given your budget I would look at a Miroku MK38 Grade 5 Sporter. Nice reliable gun for clay breaking plus would not look out of place game shooting if desired. You will get one for £2600 before discount.

I would say your sp1 has only lost its initial new gun tightness I have Berettas that have shot over 200k cartridges. As for buying at a game fair or any other showground I would forget that as it's not the best environment to judge if the gun you are looking at is suited in a tent with hundreds of people milling around you. Also with the cost of trade stands these days they cannot afford to do any deals of any value.Maybe you would benefit from spending a little on a decent coach and taking him with you to help choose the correct gun for you a few dealers have the facility for you to try before buying.personally I would buy second hand as if you do spend 5k on a new one around 1000 pounds of it will just benefit the vat office. The models you have mentioned are all quite different. You cannot buy a gun on what catches your eye so to speak.

I'd much rather have a 2nd hand DT10 than a new 725, night and day difference in build quality.

DT10 is a proper bit of clay busting kit where the 725 feels Micky mouse in comparison.

Personally I'd rather have a quality good condition 2nd hand top level O/U than a new lower quality one. Not to mention the saving you'll make and the satisfaction of owning a quality bit of kit.

After 10,000 rounds the beretta should just be nicely worn in not worn out!

If you like Browning's look out for a used B25 - B2 G etc

You should be able to pick up 1 for around £5k secondhand, try Elderkins of Spalding, they will be at the game fair and usually have a good stock of these available and all will come with free fitting and warranty.

Are handmade in Belgium and vastly superior to the Japan based models in respect of handling as new they cost £12000 +

I went to an open day sponsored by Beretta and Zoli a couple of years ago or whenever it was that the 692 first came out and much preferred the Zoli to the 692. They make some very nice quality guns in my opinion but for whatever reason they're not up there in the 'desirable' bracket so resale could be a potential pitfall.

With that budget I'd personally be looking at DT10's, Perazzi or CG even though I'm a Browning fan.

Some very good and interesting views, thank you for that. I shall definitely be paying Caeser Guerini some serious consideration.

I would love to go to Doveridge this weekend as the demo day does sound perfect but alas, anniversary weekend, I will get roasted by her indoors if I delayed our trip away.

Oh also, yes the Beretta is only slightly loose. But it's an excuse nonetheless!!!

Just swapped to a summit Impact Black 32"- has the high rib and adjustable comb from a 682 Gold E 30"

I absolutely love it - although I was getting good scores with the 682, I shot the CG and it felt so much more comfortable. After a blast at the Pattern plate - bang - maintained my scores and then went on to improve - now shooting low 90's (Skeet)

Thanks Daf. I was thinking I should message you really. The high comb or an adjustable comb is definitely a must, would you agree?

I have you to blame for planting the seed that the current one could do with a service. Thought it a good excuse to get something else!!!!

If you want to spend the full £5k, this is what I would spend it on.
