Sales of petrol cars, the small engined Eco models, have increased significantly so petrol sales up so up the price!

This is true..even in America there is a drive(excuse the pun) to produce more fuel efficient vehicles and the production of your 6 7 & 8 litre gas guzzlers are slowly being reduced. Particularly as USA's major oilfields reached a production peak in about 75. The Yanks use 18million Barrels of oil a day so something has to be done to reduce that consumption and preserve oil stocks. I think the 100mpg vehicle will be common place in 25 - 30 years time

Oil reserves are finite and most research and production companies estimate 40 - 60 years reserves at current extraction rates, possibly 30 if China and Asia continue to consume oil at the current rate. On average 30 gallons of fuel ( diesel and petrol ) are refined from 42 Gallons ( 1 barrel of oil )

By comparison our consumption of oil is insignificant so to raise a reasonable revenue on our consumption, duty has to be proportionally higher.

Fuel costs may come down short term but long term they can only go up..ten, twenty years from now it will be £3 - 5 per litre perhaps even more but the major motor manufacturers will be producing 100 -150 mpg motor vehicles by then and your average 4wd will be a museum piece.

Biofuel diesels are not a viable option as we cant produce enough to meet the insatiable demand...Bioethanol fuels are the way forward and many modern petrol engines can be adapted to utilise this fuel source.

Don't even get me started on aviation fuel usage. Shut Heathrow for a week and we could all run our cars free for a year

I saw diesel and unleaded petrol at the same price of £115.99 per litre at Sainsbury's , Folkestone this afternoon.

First time for very many years that I have seen them the same price, hopefully we can get back to the days when diesel was a few pence cheaper. :good:

Tesco in Huntly has it at 114.9p which is 2p less than unleaded.Include the 18p off and its a long long time since i paid that little to fill up.

In 1995 petrol was 60.9p a litre, diesel was 54.9 and a gallon of engine oil was £5.99. In 2015 petrol is £1.17 a litre, diesel is £1.20. And a gallon of engine oil is £5.99. And the oil is now semi synthetic and of vastly Improved quality compared to 1995s equivalent.

Thats interesting. I have a vague memory of 98 it must of rose to about 70-80p a litre ut was only about 90cents a litre in Australia and at the time and u were getting about $2.5 to a £ then, so almost 2.5 times as cheap

So why is fuel so expensive nowadays?? The price of a barrel of crude is at a low of around $50-60 a barrell, yet only a few years ago was over 100 (would be interesting to know wot crude was in 95 for comparision) The price of a barrel seems to have halved yet price at pump only came down about 10p really, yet the minute the price goes up a few dollars price at pump will increase.

I do realise the government takes more that its fair share but it can't have increased its share that significantly in 20 years surely?

Shaun ,sainsbury,s do point 9,asda do .7 to undercut them ,its an irrelevance as we got ,moggisons, tescos ,sainsbury,s,and a couple of another,s who all price match.it doesnt matter where i go theyre all charging the same.but im a nasty orrible diesel driver and am poisoning the world.if you believe the hype.all hydrocarbon burners give off noxious gasses ,but not as much HOT air as politicians

My Puch Maxi took half a gallon of 2star and a squirt of two stroke oil for a quid but that would have been around 1981.

Now we are talking, that was the first bike I actually bought with my pocket money.... cost me £15 and that was the bike not the cost of filling her up! Many will laugh now but as an 11 y.o. lad, it was great fun .... and mine!

I bought my Honda 50, a crash helmet and a year's insurance for £20! I can't remember if that included the "L" plates.

Mind you, as a Merchant Navy cadet, that was a month's pay before deductions. (1970).

By the way, the government has not long ago authorised the addition of up to %20 ethanol to petrol. Which loves moisture. And will corrode metal components. And definitely wont help in carbs on bikes. And doesnt keep if your car isnt used regularly. Thanks for that. Stay away from that supermarket ****, if frank and ron aren't advertising it on the sides of their cars tomorrow in Hungary then it's not worth buying.

What tosh. Supermarkets get their fuel from the same places as the petrol companies. Or do you think that Tesco have their own refineries.

Aye but they do buy the cheapest petrol with little or no additives (its the additives that are really expensive) and i have no doubt they will be diluting it with as much ethanol as they are allowed too, legally.

I rarely buy supermarket fuel for that reason. Same with high grade engine/hydralic oil now, the oil itself is faiirly cheap but u pay a lot more for the extra additives which improve the performance of it, some of the expensive oil has very little % oil in it now compared to the cheap stuff

Dunno if u can remember 4/5 years ago a lot of cars where conking out down about london/ down south and they reckon it was due to excess silicon in supermarket petrol wheres the extra additives in normal petrol minimised any engine problems even thou they probably had the same bad batch

The internet is full of articles on this subject. Some people claim branded is better than supermarket others that it isn't. Autocar did a more scientific based test a few years ago and found that any difference in performance or MPG was statistically negligible. I'll try to dig it out.

With most things I would go for a brand name over a non branded item but for petrol I buy wherever is convenient i.e. Nearest and no queue. Life's too short to spend trawling around for 1p/litre or queueing for 5 minutes.
