craftycarper
Well I'll be damned, in from work tonight at 7:20 and I have not had one knock at the door....happy days! On another note I do recall a work colleague who lives with his elderly mother had a bit of grief from local kids a few years back they sprayed obscenities down the side of his house, lovely. I think they should only knock if invited, by this I mean if you have decorations outside or a carved out pumpkin on the doorstep then that should be the signal to say your welcome to knock. I have no objections to them having a bit of fun, but not to the stage where it becomes intimidating or terrorising the elderly, on the other hand it's still a load of old ****, I've never done it, never taken my kids out and knocked on strangers doors and wouldn't want my own kids taking the grandchildren out doing the same, but that's their choice, they live in different times. Danger-Mouse
+1 Me neither, I only remember it emerging from the states surely in late 80's & 90's around the films maybe nightmare on elm street etc, either that or I'm just getting too darn old to remember I did it in the early 80s, along with Mischievous Night, Bonfire Night, Carol Singing and in the mid 80s letting the New Year in. With the exception of Michievous Night they were all a way of having a bit of fun and padding out your pocket money to buy a few more sweets. No money on Mischievous Night, just fun . . . at least for us.
shaun4860
If the obscenities continue either in picture form or written word then this thread will close and people will end up on the norty step

shaun4860
What is mischievous night? Never heard of it, Back in the early 70's we used to go trick or treating round the officers quarters on base (RAF) You got better rewards from them...lol I suppose being on base the safety issue never came up, everyone did it. Not a fan these days as I have had the teens not even dressed up, just after money, when refused sitting room window got egged, just don't answer now
Davyo
I think it's all changed ,one time everyone knew everybody in the village & it was safe for kids to go knocking on doors. But a village full of strangers with kids knocking on doors without parents in tow I find very wrong. Dr D
Halloween is not American. It a 2000 plus year old Celtic festival that started here. Claim it back I say. London\Derry had a great festival last night. Check it out. Edited November 1, 2015 by Dr D
Winston72
where I live its the night before bonfire night, burning bag of poo ,door handles tied to bins, knock n run etc though to be fair I've never known kids do it................I did , but maybe its a generational thing, there is rather a good film made in Leeds called mischief night. Pretty much as Winston says, just silly harmless tricks. I dare say we annoyed some people but we never did any property damage or anything malicious. Maybe it`s just a Yorkshire thing? dawntredder
That's two of us then, I really do not remember this American fad been over here in the 70's.then bully for you coz were we lived everyone did it!! As for American fad...don't think so fella it is celebrated over a good part of the world its not American even tho they are divvys!...its the eve before all saints day,it means "all hallows eve" it was originally a celebration of the end of winter when when farmers and herders would bring the cattle and livestock in for the beginning of winter....its for kids now but you must be against a little fun for them!! Get a grip for Christ sake!
