Not sure about you folks but not looking forward to getting home tonight after work and being pestered by idiots in costumes knocking on the door. I'm afraid it's lights out and the dogs can bounce off the front door for a couple of hours which should put them off. About time they banned the bloody americanised commercialised thing....then it's followed by poxy fireworks and then Christmas.......humbug!

Ah, it's different in our village, the little ones have a party in the village hall, then all go together and only knock on doors with a carved pumpkin outside, indicating its welcome.

It's good fun, nothing sinister.

I must be the pigeonwatch odd bod lol, i think its great to see the kids having such a good time, it reminds me of when my own kids were small.

Yup ^^^^^

Changed days indeed, in the rural Borders in the 1950's we were always welcome our little band of three, and quite well rewarded into the bargain. Now we have been invaded by American trick or treat and pumpkin lanterns instead of the good old fashioned bagey or turnip. Not to mention the ridiculous priced costumes on sale in every supermarket.

Little village halls, kids party's are great, nowt wrong with either. It's just the droves that come into your area, you don't recognise anyone or parents, just a loada codswallop overpriced ****, I certainly don't recall doing any of this or friends come to think of it in the seventies onwards. Only seemed to have materialised in the nineties onwards, bloody rip off

Again, in my situation it's not strangers, friendly neighbours.

I'm sure but many parents aren't so responsible, it's like when kids have to go around knocking on doors asking for sponsorship money for something they are doing at school? Madness! My parents wouldn't let me as a child partly because of the obvious safety considerations but mostly because they thought it was damn rude!

I cannot help but smile at the cretins buying Pumpkins in the Supermarkets-whatever next? What's even worse though is that they are competing for space with the myriad of Christmas tat that adorns every shelf as far as the eye can see-shame on all you corporate money grabbing scum-not even remembrance day yet-somebody needs to stand up and show some respect :/

Agreed, my parents wouldn't either.

Just saying that if it's an organised thing, for the kids to have fun and introduce themselves to devil worship gently it's all good.

I agree a lot teenagers with bin bags on there head find it an ideal time to terrorise people

I loathe the concept of my daughter going door to door begging for sweets but, as with many things as she gets older, my concerns come second and the missus sides with child and I'm told she's just "having fun" with her friends trick or treating is now seen as the norm

I think it is good fun and if it encourages kids to take a step back from computer games, social media and the tv to actually engage in some human/zombie/monster interaction then more power to their elbow. Even better if the kids parents also engage and join in too.

Sadly that does include kids wearing a bin bag and thinking they have an entitlement to getting a few bob or a handful of sweets, but where there is an opportunity to exploit then someone always will.

I think that we are far too insular and close our door to society and other people, in my experience the US can be a much friendlier place with people genuinely taking an interest in others so if we import a bit of their OTT attitude to things like Halloween then hopefully we can import some of their sense of warmth and community as well.

We have a choice of what commercialism brings to us, we can look at it as nothing other then corporate exploitation and trying to get a few quid from us, or we can use the opportunity to strengthen our family and community relationships and do something that makes us all smile a little bit more, even if that comes at the relatively tiny expense of a cheesy costume or accessory.

I do agree with Blackpowder though, we need to embrace the neep more and the pumpkin less. In fairness though pumpkins are much easier to carve and hollow out, a tough old neep and a sharpish knife has been the cause of much shed blood over the years and not costume blood either.

Around here it's more in the line of that as posted by Kyska. You do get the odd few teenagers trying it on but they're given short shrift and daren't do anything too malicious in reprisal as they're mostly known, but even they don't harass the elderly.

My OH has stocked up on sweets specifically for the purpose but is away tonight so it will be the constant getting up to answer the door which grates on me. :) Must admit I felt embarrassed knocking on neighbours doors and asking for sweets when my two were younger, as it wasn't something we did at that age, but hey ho, that's progress for you.

The wife of a mate from work has booked a meal and bought tickets for SPECTRE tonight solely on the basis she doesn't want to be in to answer the door to all the kids around her housing estate.

We don't get kids here, it's teens and more high that low teen at that  all wanting money not sweets.

The youngsters tend to do the rounds before its dark which is sensible! Then after dark I lock the gate I am afraid! Can't afford to keep my own head above water at present, let alone fund some teens habit!
