smokinggun
My favourite actor has got to be Ron Perlman, I even liked him in the low budget horror channel films. Also unlike other actors such as Wesley snipes Ron has time to talk to fans and does live chats answering fan questions on his facebook page, a lot of actors forget its the fans that put them where they are. Pistol p
Thanks for the replies on this folks. I suppose I was trying to say I admire the way Tom hanks can convince me that he can be someone else with conviction. And he does it in a way that doesn't come over as crass or obscene or uncomfortable, a bit like how Ronnie barker used to do comedy. And hanks does diversity well too, from being in a landing module or a airport lounge to being the voice of an animated cowboy. I like Eastwood a lot but in my minds eye he's never too far from a gun so flying a space shuttle didn't work for me. Anyway interesting replies. Thanks. John_R
I'll be brave, and offer a dissenting voice. I cannot bear Tom Hanks at all.

bazzab
Agree with you all pretty much. Some serious talent mention here.. I'd like to add to the pot Tom Hardy. Now there's an actor. The Krays was just amazing. Yes he's only just started out. He's going to be a Hollywood great, if not already..
Penelope
Catch me if you can. Both Hanks and De Caprio. I regard Tom Hanks as his generations Henry Fonda or James Stewart; typical clean cut all American hero. The only difference being is that neither Hanks nor Stewart were ever really convincing as baddies, especially Hanks in Road to Perdition, more of a baddie Lite, whereas the last thing anyone expected when the camera panned up to reveal who had just shot a child in Once Upon a Time in the West, was Henry Fonda. Hanks will go down as one of Hollywoods all time greats, and close on his heels is, in my opinion, Leonardo De Caprio. Before you start laughing, have a think about his roles and how he's played them. Ok, he can be forgiven for Titanic, much as Hanks can be forgiven for Turner and Hooch, but from Blood Diamond to The Aviator and from The Great Gatsby to The Departed, he is one seriously talented actor. Scorsese wouldn't consider him otherwise. Anyone who hasn't seen him in the Wolf of Wall Street is missing out. There are only a few truly iconic actors in Hollywood history, but I think I can agree Hanks may be among them.

English
Not normally the leading actor but I always enjoy films with Robert Duvall. I think another actor who's films I enjoy - Morgan Freeman. I'm not the biggest fan of Kevin Costner but did enjoy "Dances With Wolves" Thinking along similar lines - Brad Pitt in films like Legends of the Fall and Meeting Joe Black deserve a mention and that naturally leads to thinking about Anthony Hopkins Gerard Butler - Law abiding Citizen Jean Reno in films like "Leon"
brett1985
like tom hanks in most of his roles and as previously said by others, I don't think he has done a bad film. cannot for the life of me work out why di caprio hasn't won an Oscar yet? very talented fella. his performance in shutter island was excellent. Samuel l Jackson gets a big thumbs up too. plays every part brilliantly. one name that I haven't seen crop up though, surprisingly, is Morgan freeman. possibly one of my favourite actors! Scully
Have just thought of an actor who in my opinion could rival Tom Hanks as a true Hollywood icon; a seriously hugely versatile and believable actor...Denzel Washington. Good guy, bad guy (think Training Day) and he can cry real tears; none of that unconvincing squinting into the sun stuff.

toxo
Jack Nicholson Is always watchable. I think "As Good As It Gets" Is my all time favourite film. I can't usually watch a film more than once but this is the exception. But then I am a people person.
