There was a redesign of the Lancaster in between, the Shackleton had a wider fuselage for crew comfort and was used for long distance maritime recon work, also had 4 x 36litre engines with contra rotating props. It did actually get used for bombing local tribes in Iraq/Afghanistan in the 50s. Most Shackletons were scrapped but the replacement was a failure so 5 Shackletons were saved and kept in service into the 80s. Known as "The Old Grey Lady" it was a great sight, I was lucky enough to clamber around one with my Dad when I was a kid. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
