pigeon controller
Following a month of no rain this was broken on Thursday with a large amount of heavy rain, During this period I have never expierienced such a drought of pigeons. I've been driving for miles without seeing a flighting bird and even at dusk not seeing birds going to roost. The tame pigeons in my garden have been regular in the way they wait in the beech trees and then swoop down to feed on the bird seed deposited on the lawn. Ive been trying to shoot some geese who are grazing some wheat fields but not having any luck so far other than walking them off and they do not return. So yesterday on my way back home I spotted a few birds in the trees around a rape field. I watched it for about an hour and four birds joined them feeding on the rape. So this morning we set out at 08.30 to check out the field and we walked off approx fifty birds. So we left them and went to find some other rape and returned after an hour to find about thirty returned so we set up with ten thawed birds on cradles above the rape and two on the magnet. Two birds decoyed straight away and the corresponding shots lifted about sixty out of the trees around the perimeter of the field. It was now 11.00 and we had some steady sport for the next couple of hours then it dried up so I went for a walk around the surrounding fields and found the birds on the hawthorns which I slowly spooked off by walking opposed the shooting. When I returned to the hide DB went for a walk to do the same. We stopped shooting at 15.00 as it went dead and we picked up fortytwo pigeons. On our drive home we went past some good roost woods and they were devoid of birds so we may be looking for birds next week and hopefully finding some. Dr D
Good to see a return. I'm sure it will start picking up soon. Temperature is dropping and the beech etc usually starts becoming a little less attractive.

Dbw1shrops
Good to see you back PC thought you'd gone on your hols for winter lol. When i started on the pigeons I used to go with a good mate I never had a license at the time and borrowed one of his guns ( rizzini ) if it went a bit quiet on the pigeon front he used to tell me to have a walk and go and rustle up some trade and I did so gladly because I was new to the sport, it sounds just like what yourself and DB do in the not so often quiet times 😉 Atvb Dave

marsh man
I am sure your drought will be short lived and your freezers will be working over time in the near future . Yesterday we had three pigeons hanging in the game larder form the days bag , I was going to take them for decoys but to tell yer the truth they were poor pigeons , two of them were small and the other one had small lumps around the beak , so the breasts will end up in a pie and the rest will go as Ferret grub . aga man
Great result during these lean times. Certainly a pigeon drought here at the minute. Woodies still hard on the berries!
old'un
Yep, been the same around here, very few pigeons feeding on the rape, gangs of 30 to 40 birds and not returning when walked off, also seeing very little movement of birds. Strange you saying about very few birds going to roost, there is a big nature reserve not far from me, its mainly woodland and usually holds thousands of birds this time of year roosting and feeding on acorns and beech, the most I have seen going to roost was about 100+ birds. One of the fields I shoot is about a mile from these woods and it usually gets hammered, I have looked at this field at first light, midday and late evening and the most I have seen on it was 30+ birds, this last month they seem to have just disappeared into thin air. You did well to shoot that many on a field that had so few birds on it, well done.
dead eye alan
Tom and I have 13 permissions between us and only one has any birds on it, shot it yesterday 24 retrieved for 42 shots, that's a great day for us at the moment. Wilts#Dave
Great result at the moment PC....all our permissions/area even are devoid of birds at the moment! Seen quite a few coming out of woodland and swirling around at great height when I was at a pheasant shoot in the week but not appearing to be heading anywhere in particular. I'm itching to get out again, 42 would do just nicely!
