Guest stevo
Right just wondering if anyone out there can shed some light on something the doctor said. Got it from work tonight and there was a letter from my GP saying that the police had been in contact regarding my SGC renewal. And there was a fee of £25.00 to pay. Just to point out I have no medical conditions ect ect. So this was just for them to respond within 21 days to say there happy and see no problem. Anyway I can't be bothered with the should I or should I not pay. I just went and paid it so job done. Right now here's the cyrptic bit. While I was there one of the doctors who happens to be the practice manager said " oh this is all to do with the new rules from firearms " yes I know mate. We was made aware of it a while back. He then said " yes this is what we have to do at the moment. But later in the year it's all changing yet again " I did ask him to explain a bit more. But he said he can't go into it. So does anyone know what changes are coming in ? Edited February 23, 2017 by stevo

old man
Just another greedy GP exploiting the confusion the GMC and others have created? BASC have an opinion not to pay. Have heard of £50 being charged though, not bad for a stamp and 2 minutes time? I have heard that the police proceed anyway in most areas after 30 days if nothing heard from GP? Guest stevo
I know what you mean chaps. I know it's maybe wrong in some cases but I just like a quite life . And as the surgery is in my village I know most of the people and doctors working there as friends am I'm certainly not going to fall out with anyone over £25.00 At end of the day rightly or wrongly there only doing as there told. It struck me as a little strange the way he implied that yet more changes were going to come into force in the not to distant future. I will have to see what I can find out over the coming weeks
ips
First off they are not allowed to charge unless feo requests a more in depth report due to concerns. Secondly if they do not respond within thirty days feo assumes no issues and signs it off. If there was an issue later then the gp will be in deep doo dah for being a lazy greedy *** and not signing the form. I would have informed my feo that gp had requested payment and let them deal with it. As for changes, no idea gp probably talking cack. But like I said I'm not gonna get all hot and bothered over £25 I was more fed up at being charged £ 30 for a dominos pizza for me and the better half last night haha. With regards the 31 days quoted. I believe it's 21 days.

CharlieT
Stevo If you haven't already seen these (the latest BMA guidance and the latest published minutes from FELWG, see item 5), they may shed a little light on your question.................... www.bma.org.uk/advice/employment/ethics/ethics-a-to-z/firearms http://shootingshed.co.uk/wp/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/FELWG-NPCC-minutes-September-2016.pdf
Old farrier
Hi stevo I'd have done the same not worth the hassle for £25....£5 a year Same as you live in a small community everyone knows everything so it probably works out better just pay and carry on Our syndicate beaters go through the doctors garden on a shooting day so definitely not worth upsetting him Bit different if you live in a larger area and have a bigger practice where you never see the same doctor To be honest I'd pay more if it keeps the doctor in the village All the best Of
dipper
I had a phone call from doctors receptionist saying the doctor will not send police a letter until l paid £25 .What you do is ignore it and if the police don't hear from doctor within 2 weeks they assume there's no problem .Look on One of the shooting web sites Dipper. ips
The problem that I see is this. Gp is to tight to take five mins to sign a document and holds you over a barrell for payment for something you have not requested, the feo did. You stand your ground, 21 days pass and feo assumes no issues BUT what if there is an issue that comes to light. Does the gp get pulled in front of a judge to explain why he didn't inform them as requested. You could say that gp looked at records and deemed no problem before he asked for payment (just to cover himself for the above scenario) in which case he has already done the work therefore the payment is pure greed just for a signature. If the gp refuses to fill in the form without even checking your records before demanding money then he or she is Imo negligent. Just a thought
sitsinhedges
People who are paying this whilst knowing it shouldn't apply are letting the wider shooting community down. They aren't going to achieve a quiet life but in fact are just encouraging more legislation and expense when those involved realise you will just roll over and pay up. So true, together we are united and strong once one by one we yield and pay then the message will be loud and clear to the home office and they will look for the full cost of issuing certificates to be paid by the certificate holder just as they are now trying to do with club home office fee and section 5 licences. They are independant contractors and can charge whatever they want. I have a foot in both camps on the matter and strongly suspect we are all better off if everyone refuses to engage. Guest stevo
Well maybe the people that seem to disagree with me paying the bill will have to let us know what you do when your time comes around.
sitsinhedges
Well maybe the people that seem to disagree with me paying the bill will have to let us know what you do when your time comes around. My time came around late last year. I had the phone call from my surgery requesting payment followed by some discussion with my doctor whilst seeing her about an unrelated matter. I ignored the original request and my renewal proceeded as normal. I was also advised by my FEO to not pay the fee.
ips
As above. My feo told me categorically that the practice is not allowed to charge me unless the feo requested further information after the initial form from gp, and if they did try to charge me then to let him know about it. Therefore in answer to the op question that is what I would do.

I would be very interested to know exactly which legislation your FEO refers to which forbids GP's charging for this service, because quite frankly he's talking out of his hat. Whilst I'm totally against such a charge, there is no law that forbids a GP from making one, which is why the whole fiasco has been passed back to the HO for them to re negotiate with GP's with a view to introducing legislation to cover the matter. wigeon jim
It's a bit different up here in Scotland, if the GP doesn't reply to the police then you will not get your cert, Jim.

There's no law forbidding a doctor to charge but equally there is no obligation to pay that charge.
Vince Green
I definitely know of somebody who didn't go to the doctor to get help with a problem that would have affected his driving licence. Can we assume the same will happen with FAC/SGC holders?
deershooter
Steve I am the same county as yourself ,and you know the problems I have had with health it's down to the doctors practice I didn't have to pay earlier in the month for my renewal .
subsonicnat
Had a renewal about 4 months back. Never heard a word from doctors or request from feo for more information. It just went straight through, strikes me its pin money for their wives.. Ps,,,I was told by a doctors wife,it was pin money if he signed something.. Personaly I would not pay it anyway,if it hits the fan,ask why. Then sort out the problem,,if they do not get a letter as said it will go through anyway.. For those who did pay it,your on very slippery slope next time they will really rip you off. Scotland have been grabbed by the hagis, they have no choice, you do..
