the more I hear about people and their dogs, the more I like my old rabbit. I just don't get the attraction I am afraid.

Do u actually shoot wandering? Quite a strange statement to make on a shooting forum (even for someone not fond of dogs)

Don't think i can think of seeing u post on a shooting related subject.

Tx4cab If ur dog was on a lead the whole incident would never have happened thou.

Just because a dog is soft does not give it the right to bother 'upset' other dogs.

Must admit i tend to walk/train mine in areas where no other dogs/people and are rarely on a lead but i keep a good eye out for other dogs/people and if i do see anyone i'll walk mine well out the way and sit them up in the wood well off path.

Was in the local coop the other night and some numpty had left 2 staffie?? X type dogs loose right at the door, not even tied up.

To be fair them seemed nice enough natured dogs but very incosiderate of other folk feart of dogs.or other dog owners

Bottom line is dogs should never be left alone with strangers or kids (even ur own), its just an accident waiting to happen even with the nicest dog

a dog came yapping at my little girl aged 4 in the park, dog keeps comming and owner is saying " its ok, its ok" as the dog is getting closer, No commands shouted at the dog from the owner!!!!!!

size 9 connected lovely with it and dog yelps like a good un and backs off with its tail between its legs,The owner gives me load of abuse. I reply with , "it only takes once mate and the once aint happening on my kid, " " how do i know that YOUR dog is ok with people? ??? especially when it does what it did,

I DONT, and am not willing to take a chance on my kids,

Be the boss over every dog you own or see .every time and there wont be any issues .

I had similar twenty odd years ago when daughter was three. We are on caravan site at Keswick (funnily enough I am here now on hols) daughter playing on beach bit at side of lake. Two big black dogs (no idea what breed) come bounding out of dog walk area (wood) straight towards her barking like crazy for some unknown reason. I lift her up above my head dogs now barking and snarling and jumping all over me. By now I have daughter as high as I can arms outstretched. The two blokes eventually got dogs on lead and started walking off. I bellow after them (and I am not an aggressive or confrontational man) "if your dogs come near my daughter again I will drop the pair of you" dozens of folk are now witnessing the commotion.

I won't ever forget the fear I had for my daughter, luckily she cant remember the incident.

The blokes came up to me the day after very sheepishly because now I am considered a mad man (I had long hair, a beard and was a scruffy biker from the old school in those days) and apologised unreservedly.

Glad to see nobody is being 'breed speciifc' here as there are many many breeds which are both 'out of control' along with owners that think they and their dogs can run riot and up to everyone and their dogs.

Now, we have a French Mastiff and although a gentle giant, he has been attacked by the local idiots and some dogs which are known to be a aggressive to others, such as a Old English Sheepdog...kid you not. He attacked Wilsy and it was only when he locked onto our dogs neck that our dog defended himself and which point it ran away (our dog was on a lead, theirs wasn't and slipped those **** slip lead types on the second attack). Vet said it would have been alot worse if it had attacked a wee dog. Owner tried to blame us, whilst clearly ours was walking fine on a lead.

Which leads me on (get it), we always put our dog on a lead at 'choke points' on paths and such but the local pillocks (and these range in age and quite a few middle age dragons) dont bother putting their dogs on a lead when they see that you are. We do both as precautionary measure for both dogs and out of respect that somebody has done so to their dog. Then we have a husky behind us, which has never been trained, runs riot (like the owner) and has ran 500m up the beach to meet our dog, missus always gets bit defensive...lol and this dog snaps at her and which point Wilsy will stand in between her and the dog, puffs up his chest and that is usually more than enough to deter a dog. However, what a fwit not controlling his dog in the first place and all those owners that dont bother constraining their dogs and allowing them to run up are eventually going to suffer the consequences of their dogs and their actions. Moreover owners like that can make other perfectly decent dogs become reactive aggressive to other dogs when they are constantly having to fend themselves and the wardens are well aware of this, why would anybody let their dogs run up to dogs that they dont know is beyond me.

Having a breed like ours demands responsibility but no more so than some ****** terrier that likes to lock onto large breeds necks, the issue is they dont see that, a wee dog owners think they can get away with it and therefore dont need to be trained...lo and behold if you do that with a giant breed but same principle to each.

I know a lot of people on here have dogs and you are all probably decent owners, but my experience is not good in any way, I live in a village and owning a dog is an obsession with many, they all like to think they are great owners, but they are not, they pick up only when people are watching, dogs mess and bags chucked over the verges, they arrogantly walk them off lead, they have them jumping all over people, they leave them barking in gardens all day and late at night, I have zero time for it and the u.k has 8 million now as pets, as my dad used to say, when people buy a dog, they lose their brain.

I go in the local pub the other night and one slob owner is chucking his bags of crisps, another is asleep on the floor dropping its guts stinking the place out.

I go on holiday and a chav owner is letting his run around the pub knocking drinks over.

I go into buildbase today and a dog is behind the counter (not serving) lol.

Have you noticed they let their offspring do the same ?

The answer is staring us in the face and is simplicity itself.

I have a young boy springer spaniel .that i work to the gun he comes to work with me and is a great family pet .i have 2 young children .

He is very well trained he walks perfectly to heel and stops on command and his recall is amazing .

Most evenings i walk him around our local greens without a lead .i dont even take one with me .

I dont need to .

I take him to school to collect my kids .they play with him down the park on the way home .a

All the other kids come over to play ,all the children in the school (infants ) know his name and play ball etc with him .non of them are scared of him as he clearly poses no threat .he doesnt jump up and takes direction from perfect strangers and children .he is happy and a joy to be with for every one .

This is is how dog owner ship should be .

I pity the owners who have aggresive dogs straining at the lead .

I take my hat of to u stu, and wish all dogs/owners were as well trained and responsible as u and ur dog.

But if ur dog is attacked and its off the lead, legally ur dog is just as out of control as the dog that attacked it.

Its not right but that is the way polis wil look at it 50/50

when i lived in town i just kept dogs on lead if on pavements etc as just easier by the time u try to sit ur dogs down and untangle 4/5 leads and put them on every time u met someone.

But unless ur dog is on a lead u really have no comeback, and even then u haven't much if ur dog is attacked

Ah, we get this all the time living in a town. My local field can sometimes have up to 30 dogs within 10 acres. We actually all know each other and often meet up and socialise the dogs etc... One of them told me I was a spoil sport as I wouldn't let my lab chase other people's balls and insist on her being sat with me unless I say she can go... But I don't want to undo all her training in 5 mins lol.

My lab got had a go at by a staff cross and the owner told me "sorry, she's a rescue" and that was like red to a bull and I suggested that He should be extra careful as its a rescue...

It's not all Midsomer village around the UK, we can't all have thousands of acres to not see other dogs, so I have had to train mine to ignore others when I need her to (getting much better!), but undoubtedly you will get dogs coming up to you unannounced.

Exactly, might be the best pooch that anybody could ever own but if it's off a lead, it's your responsibility if it goes Pete Tong. Not everybody who puts their dog on a lead has an out of control dog, it's common sense to put the thing on a lead at 'bottlenecks' and so forth, you dont know how others will react. Dog on a lead at the right times is the responsible way. Those whom think their dogs dont need to be on a lead at all are worse than any 'dog straining on a lead', your responsible if it runs out into the middle of road and gets knocked down and the owner has to live with that. Too many walk their dogs without a collar or take a lead with them, I actually think its law now.
