Just seen some footage of ...............anti confederate ? / anti slavery lobby persons....going around Charlottsville lassooing bronze statues of what looked like Davey Crockett etc and pulling them off their plinths..............

this is not good...........in my time working and living in Florida...i know for a fact this aint going to go down well......"dont mess with our history and identity" they will say.................

i think there is going to be a big problem with the reasurrgence of the right wing groups..........which will highlight a dividing line ....seperating the Confederate and Unionist battle lines........

This is not good there will be some stuff that comes out of the woodwork that aint been seen in a long while..............

Dont think they have done the General E Lee statue yet.....bet the confederates put an armed guard on it.........

As I recall most of the founding father's were slave owners, are they now going to eradicate George Washington and Thomas Jefferson from American history.

i suppose we can put in a claim to Scandinavia....for all the theft.......rape..........pillage........and slavery.........

should we pull down the statue of Winston Churchill........because of his veiws and what he said about Gandi.......... :hmm:

I watched Trumps news conference and to be honest I thought he handled it well. He pointed out that there were some very bad people on both sides etc etc. I then pulled up as much live coverage as I could of the riots and he was correct. There where left wing supporters wielding baseball bats, both sides equally to blame BUT of course the liberal media CNN etc did not want to report that. I don't believe that there is so much animosity between folks in the north and south, these outbreaks can be blown out of all proportion by a very small number of activists idiots. I walked the streets of Ladywood, Birmingham after those riots and could not have had a more pleasurable welcome from the folks who lived there of every shade and colour. They were brilliant. Again just a bunch of criminal, drug pushers letting the local population down and giving the area a bad name.

Just love the way some of you are prepared to ignore racist scumbags that have killed one woman there already and make an equivalence between them and so called extreeeeme left liberal snowflakes  (what the hell is that anyway) you don't watch news much do you ? POTUS is 100% racist white supremacist and his hand has been blown wide open, murica is in the grips of a mega dose of karma.

You do know political people there (mainly European heritage too) have resigned their posts in response to the racist Trump's rants don't you ?

I find it hard to listen to or look at the TV news as the media both the American and the British have to twist everything that people say as you said all that Trump did was to point out that people on both sides was very aggressive and if people like the statue and think that it has been there for over a hundred years it should be left there but it seem that is bad we have it going on all over this coutry as well it makes me happy that I am old as I do not want to live in a world full of stupid people like them.

I should hope so too  somebody has to tell it like it is. There is no such thing as extreeeeeeeeeeeeeme left, it's just another one of those deflective terms that's dreamt up by people who refuse to accept there is such a thing as racist scumbag haters.

What Trump did was refuse to condemn racist torch bearers who hide their hatred of non whites behind so called nationalism, everyone saw through it including most Americans though not many muricans ;) and those who would rather stay on the same side as said muricans.

Exactly and the left wing/snowflake press do not -- and yes there is an extreme left just as there is an extreme right except those of leftish persuasion do not admit to it as it kills most of their arguments stone dead.

I prefer not to think of things as extreme left or extreme right, it is quite simply extremist whatever political motivation may exist as some sort of justification. A thug is a thug whatever their political conscience.

It is abhorrent that we should have people flying a nazi swastika when we still have living memory of the atrocities perpetrated under that banner. I also think it is abhorrent that we should try to re-write, discard or ignore our history because we perceive things differently today.

My belief is that the reason that we are witnessing an apparent upsurge in these public shows of hatred (not just in the US) is not that it has somehow become legitimised by the election of an utter fool of a president, and so become more prevalent and widespread, but because we have tried to hide the ugly underbelly of how society actually behaves through adoption of things like political correctness, safe spaces, etc.

Drowning out unpopular opinion by shouting louder does not make those opinions go away, if anything it strengthens them and ultimately it will break through and when it does everybody who shares those opinions will try to take the opportunity to make their voice heard too.

The American Civil War was not fought over slavery, it was fought over money. The parallels to Brexit are almost spooky, the Carolinas decided to leave the union because they felt they were being made to contribute too much money to support the poorer Northern States.

The North refused to let them leave and the result was war.

The promise to free the slaves was made by Lincoln later in the war and it was tactical. With all the white men of fighting age away he hoped the promise would cause the black slaves in the South to feel empowered to rise up in a rebellion that would destabilise the Confederacy and divert troops back to supress it.

Lincoln and the Union never gave a toss about the slaves. In a letter to Horace Greeley on August 22 1862 ( Greeley was the editor of the New York Tribune) Lincoln wrote, If I could have saved the Union without freeing the slaves I would have done it.

The Civil War turned some of the richest States into some of the poorest. Many of the wealthy plantations never restarted and the cotton industry was wiped out. Many states today like Alabama, Georgia etc today are still blighted and will never recover. The cost to the US has been immense.

Today slavery guilt is big business in the US, There are over 1000 lawsuits open against companies, states, even individuals whose ancestors owned slaves but its all about compensation. My great great grandmother was allegedly a slave on your great great Grandfathers plantation so I want ten million dollars compensation.

The problem at the minute is that the left have been in a position of power for decades and people can't seem to understand winning and losing anymore and now it's affecting democracy, this could possible go back to schools being told to give participation awards for everyone and spreading the "it's not about winning" mindset, we have generations of people now who cause havoc if they don't get their way, they stamp their feet and in this case cause riots, right or wrong Brexit was voted in according to the rules laid out, exactly the same as Trump, people are banging on about "The popular vote", the popular vote isn't worth a damn thing, to get elected he played the game and won, exactly the same as the Tories in our election, nearly every week there's a news story about JC being PM shortly...

The left at the minute have groups that are very dangerous as they're stirring up hatred and have a platform to voice it (LOTS of news agencies & Hollywood millionaire snowflakes), the right have got similar groups but these haven't really had the platforms (thankfully), in my opinion these platforms need identifying and closing down, going back to the topic as the Barcelona news broke I had a look on liveleaks and CNN 'news' were trying to suggest it may have been a copycat of Charlottesville http://freebeacon.com/politics/cnn-questions-barcelona-attack-copycat-charlottesville/ rather than calling it for what it was :/

Of which the sacking of the Rochdale MP, Sarah Champion is a prime example.

My take on the whole episode is that two distinct points have been morphed into one, mainly by the press. On one hand, I do believe Trump is right in saying that there was violence and intent on both sides - ok one individual took it to the next level with his car. What I personally think he has done wrong is not to come out and condemn the extreme right wing fanatics - KKK, Nazi party etc. I'm sure none of us on here would condone these people. The problem Trump has is that this group comes across as "true red blooded Americans" and are the ones who fall for all the MAGA rhetoric.
