Handwarmers and Cartridges

Anyone ever done it?

I just have by accident obviously, dropped my handwarmer into pocketfull of cartridges.

A petrol fueled handwarmer, other types are available.

Realised after 5 minutes, but it happened.

Is it like a mobile phone in a filling station ? Never going to cause a fire ever.

Or am I lucky still to have two balls!

Anyone else care to admit to any stupid stuff ?

When I was a kid someone threw a couple of cartridges on a bonfire, the embers were red hot, but the cartridge took many seconds of searing heat before it just went Pfut! I cannot imagine the heat from a handwarmer would reach a prolonged temperature anywhere near that required to set a cartridge off? But I would ere on the safety side! And not keep em in the same pocket!

Without the detonation cartridges just go phin my experience. ?

I remember my Grandad telling me how they boiled kettles using Plastic Explosive during the War.

No primer no bang.

Burnt like Hell he said !

What a bunch of drama queens .... if your hand warmer got hot enough to set a cartridge off , it would be to hot to touch haha ?

cartridges will not not go off unless in a chamber . Throw one in a fire , your get nothing more than a pop fro the primer .

Not quite true.

I Shot one with an Air Rifle when I was 14. From about 10 yards away.

1  1/16 Eley -BSA Meteor

Big bang and the shot whent everywhere, not sure how much power it had though.

Dont know how I still have all of my fingers doing daft stuff as a youngster!

Then you must have detonated it by striking the primer. Aerosol cans on a fire are more dramatic than ammo, especially expanding foam aerosols!

Would a 9v battery, shorting across the catridge, set it off?

A shorting 9v battery gets hotter than a handwarmer so maybe. Try it and see. :)

Had a 9v battery in my pocket and I guess my keys or coins shorted it, took a mo to figure out why my pocket felt it was in fire. Takes a while to heat up by the way, it isn't instant.

You appear to be the expert! I'll leave that one for you to try. :good:

As a kid I have shot the primer in live shotgun cartridge loads of times and whilst it is true to say that proper combustion does not take place outside of a purpose designed chamber, don't assume that they all just go pffut either.

I once place one inside the small hollow of a tree and literally had to duck down as the rocket effect sent the shell zooming over my head at a good rate, if memory serves the range was around 20 yards.

Another time when all efforts in hitting the centre failed on one particular shell, I gave my .177 Whaley Crossman 2 pumps and gently lowered and centred it on the shell which was lying flat on the ground in front of me, why or how it managed to propel itself forward and head butt the bone at the side of my foot I know not but I can promise you it was more than a pffut.

PS. I doubt you can make a shell go off with radiator or handwarmer heat if your life depended on it.

We’re talking about what happens to a cartridge if it is heated up, NOT about detonation, and I can assure you that if you throw cartridges in a fire they just go pphhhffft!

Yes I know that, :| I am merely adding to the general discussion (as others have done) that in certain circumstances even outside of a chamber they can do more than just fizz out.
