Scrumbag
Hello folks, I have come into a bit of pest control around some buildings so thinking of getting an air rifle for it. Primarily pigeons, thinking .177 PCP. Any recommendations on rifles and scopes? Would like a magazine and not too heavy so my wife can use it. Thanks in advance, Scrummy
Walker570
To be honest the worlds your oyster there are numerous choices. Check out your local air rifle specialist shop/s and have a look. I initially purchased a TX200 springer and it is still here, great rifle BUT there are occasions where a PCP and a magazine can be helpful when multi shots get offered and need speedy action. I purchased probably one of the simplest, a AA S200 with 10 shot mags second hand and it has proved well capable ...check out my returns on tre rats and magpies on here...most have been with the S200 .22. I also sort barn pigeons and it is more than capable doing that as well ...another case where you might get two or even three chances in quick succesion. I would lean towards a .22 for pigeons although the TX200 .177 will knock 'em down out to 30yrds with the heavier 10gr pellets. Hawke AirMax take a lot of beating scope wise. old'un
If I was in the market for a PCP think I would give the WEIRAUCH HW100 range a long hard look. review of the HW100S bit expensive but the build quality is superb, there are others in the range that are a bit cheaper, my preference would be .22. Ultrastu
As much of a fan as i am of .177 for most quarry .id also lean towards a .22 if its primarily for pigeons. . Take a look at the bsa ultra. And the gamo phox (comes in a kit and is great value)
Flyboy1950
I am currently evaluating, when I have the time, a SMK Victory PR900W. Cost out of the box £200.00. Add the filling adaptor £12.50 posted off of Evil Bay and you are ready to go. Comes equipped with iron sight and a multi shot magazine. Lots of stuff on You tube. First filling to 190 bar was producing 11.54 ft/lbs with 177 pellets (JCB Exact) It may not be to everyones taste but it is the lightest pcp rifle I have come across, and am hoping with a little fettling it can be recommended for the new young shooters in the air gun club I run. Perfect size for the lady wife and not to heavy. I have purchased to go with it, a cheap Chinese 4-9x40 illuminated scope (£18.00) and a set of low mounts from Ramsbottoms (about £3.00 posted). You may be better off with the .22 as it will give a bigger shot count over the .177 as the on board air reservoir is only 1 liter. I have removed the plastic insert in the barrel weight, it does moderate the sound but I am not sure at this point it wasnt allowing the pellets to clip it, causing accuracy problems along with a rough and ready muzzle crown, which I have since remade. I am going to revisit the range again this evening, so may have a bit more to report tomorrow. At these prices I thought it worth a dabble! Mice!
my first pcp was my rapid, but it would be far too heavy for your misses , I'd say bsa ultra, you should be able to pick up a decent rifle and scope second hand easily enough. 30 minutes ago, Flyboy1950 said: I am currently evaluating, when I have the time, a SMK Victory PR900W. I would be wary of a scope that cheap, i realise your putting it on a pcp but scope and mounts that cheap sound fishy.
bruno22rf
Doubt that the victory holds 1 ltr of Air - shot count is dismal at around 30/charge.
oldypigeonpopper
hello, find your self a decent S200 and buy a pump off ebay around £
Ultrastu
You can only have up to 500 cc bottles on guns anything above is subject to the same rules that govern air refill bottles and need testing every 5 years . Id guess that the smk airtube is around 100 cc
pork chop
My lad just got an airarms s200 really pleased with it accurate n light
Flyboy1950
Oops my mistake, typing error and not proof reading properly. it is of course only 100 cc`s. Forgot to mention that the trigger is non adjustable, though the blurb says it is. I didn`t have time to do much testing on Monday as was too busy, but I did manage to quickly fire 3 magazines for 27 shot count and the air pressure gauge has dropped from 190 bar to 140 bar. This is a slow ongoing project as am more interested in my fire arm ballistics testing, but will update as and when.
The Burpster
You will be hard pushed to get a better first rifle than a BSA Scorpion. Loved mine, incredibly accurate, light and easy to use and live with.
Jason_ox
My first pcp was a weihrauch hw100tk .177 I sold it a few years ago and miss it a lot. Utterly amazing and accurate, more accurate than me. Single shot and multi shot magazines, it was a bit heavy but not too noticeable. Paired up with an MTC mamba, probably better scopes out there now but was good at the time. Give one a go I don’t think you’ll be disappointed! bruno22rf
On the ball as always Ultrastu - if you want the other half to use it as well then the S200 is as good as anything else out there. .20 Hunter
Personally, if your after a total user friendly calibre. Get a .20, reason is because, thete is only one head size. Unlike 177 or 22. Limited pellet choice too, but never known a .20 pellet not to be liked by any .20 barrel. Gun choices are either HW100 , HW110 and Daystate Regal, there is wait for the .20 but well worth the wait.
Dekers
Sorry, not read all this and I know the .177 has its uses and fans, but if you are mainly after pigeons then .22 every time!
