Rewulf
My daughter has just started A levels, and one of her chosen subjects is photography. The inevitable 'I need a camera' has been raised. 'And no, I dont want one of your old compacts' ? She seems to think shes got to have a big bulky SLR ,Ive told her to talk to the tutor, and see what she needs. In my humble unprofessional opinion, camera technology has moved on somewhat, and good images can be obtained with small interchangeable lens type cameras. Even my phone can do RAW images, so esteemed knowledgeable camera people. Looking for recommendations. P.S. I dont want to spend a fortune, she has a nasty habit of breaking things, she breaks nearly every phone screen shes ever had.
Smokersmith
Would it be one of those situation where she does need to have the 'toys' an SLR gives to allow the various theories to be learned practically? Most airplanes have autopilot, but always good then the person knows how to land the thing themselves!!
TIGHTCHOKE
Rob as you say, get her to ask the Tutor what she needs, second hand and cheap would be my suggestion, she has to learn the eternal triangle;

Most airplanes have autopilot, but always good then the person knows how to land the thing themselves!! Quite possibly, shes only been on the course a few days, so she doesnt really know herself yet. Dont mind getting her a cheap SLR to play with, but shes notorious for saying 'I need that' and within days its 'I need something else now ' Just now, TIGHTCHOKE said: Rob as you say, get her to ask the Tutor what she needs, second hand and cheap would be my suggestion, she has to learn the eternal triangle; Thanks, that sounds good solid advice ? TIGHTCHOKE
Rob, contact these people; London Camera Exchange. A specialist supplier of new and second-hand cameras, lenses and photographic equipment. 0115 941 7486 7 Pelham St, Nottingham NG1 2EH An old but serviceable Canon like the 20D or 30D should be a reasonable price and will allow her to change lenses and a later upgrade to a younger Canon which would allow the same lenses to be used. TIGHTCHOKE
I think everyone started their SLR learning with either a Zenith or a Practica.

Ultrastu
Find a nice sh .nikon d3000 / 3001 /3002 etc. With a standard lens or 2 if it comes with. That way your buying into the biggest and best camera system ever at a very cheap price .and all the lenses and bodies will be interchangeable for ever . Should pick one up for around £ 200 Which is better than spending on something that was obsolete the day after it was brand new. It will do evry thing she needs and can learn all the basics of photography . A phone camera will teach her nothing.

You can spend mega bucks on the latest, but the older stuff still does the same job. Maybe more bells and whistles , maybe a little faster, but when she gets a bit more advanced, she can pay for them herself ! She takes some great shots with her phone though, she seems to have the 'eye' for the 'moment' Edited September 7, 2018 by Rewulf
Stonepark
I suspect any of the 12mp compact/bridge cameras with full manual and raw would be suitable. There are plenty of pre-owned 2-5 year old digital cameras available for not much money.
welsh1
I can take a good pic with my pixel 2xl, in fact it shocks me how good the pics are. Then i take a pic with my canon 7d and realise why i paid all that money for the camera and lens. A proper DSLR can take an amazing picture if you know how to use it properly, there are some very good older versions to be had second hand, i recently sold a Canon 40d for £120 in DSLR terms it's a dinosaur, but it takes a great photo. But remember the same as shooting, the glass is everything, spend on good lenses they will make a difference to your picture quality. Good luck, photography is like shooting, you need deep pockets ? AVB
I am working in Tokyo at the moment and the Japanese love replacing their kit on a regular basis. You can pick up some great quality, perfect condition, second hand kit for about half price.

John_R
I still have my Zenit E, which was superseded by a Pentax ME Super. The latter was stolen and the loss of the film inside meant more than that of the hardware at the time. I did find another ME Super and I still have it. I currently use a Nikon D300 and see no need to change yet. I still have the D70 that I had before. I kept it as a spare but frankly ought to sell it. Paul1440
Started with a Zenith EM which had hhe olympic motive on the prizm cap. Still have it as well as an Olympus OM10, Canon 50e film camera. Stuck with canon when changing to digital DSLR as the EM lenses I had fitted. Recently picked up a Canon 40d body for £70 as a second ca.era for those trips out where it's likely to get knocked about a bit. Good camera and takes great pics. If I wanted another good value camera I'd be looking at a secondhand 30d, 40d,50d or 60d, depending on condition Nd price when I look.
