Sponge cutting

Hi all 

 

any one have a good easy way to cut the foam/sponge that in hard cases . Basically to cut around the barrel and stock

I believe a hot wire is used.....anything that needs pressure would distort/compress the foam and the resultant cut will be uneven?...

Hi yes I fort about the hot wire . But it’s more like sound proofing sponge material. Not foam. All the hot wire say foam only . ?

I have done it by heating a long sharp butchers knife with a blow torch

I've seen it done with , hot wire, electric carving knife , and band saw . If it's stiffer than normal foam , you might get away with a hacksaw blade or tenon saw( very slowly and gently). If it were me, I'd be tempted to try a small angle grinder with a very thin steel cutting blade, however, that would depend how thick the foam material was , and it could also get very dangerous , very quickly! .

Whatever, to get an accurate end product, it needs to be cut without pressure on, and distortion of, the material!

All I would add is take care if you're thinking of using anything to burn it as most foams will give off some very nasty fumes some of which are carcinogenic . ..so make sure if you do its outside. ..👍

If you want it super accurate you may be able to get it laser cut, depends on the composition and thickness though

You can get a special knife blade to fit a jigsaw I cut some egg tray type foam with one and it cut like butter . They are longer than normal  and say cut 100mm thick

Still haven’t cut it yet . Think going to try the electric carving knife

Do you have a soldiering gun?  If so use hose clamps to hold a butter knife to it.

have a look on you tube re foam cutters cheese wire battery charger or similar /batteries should have something about the shed to make a hot wire cutter / shape the wire into a loop and carve what you need
