TRINITY
I do know and understand capitalism. However my point I am trying to make is that the biggest threat to capitalism is capitalism in the extreme. The excesses of footballers and many others are the biggest recruiting sergeants for the likes of Corbyn. Like I said I am not a socialist but seeing these selfish and over indulged people behave causes me concern.

The Heron
Football is one of the few business where outgoing costs are substantially greater than incoming money and yet are still allowed to operate by the banks.
TRINITY
Apparantley the average Weekley wage of all premiership footballers is £73 K per week or £3,796,000 annually They are now being asked to live on £51k per week or £2,652,000 annually Those being the average ,then there is an high likelihood that some of the younger squad members may be forced to live on around a million pound per year. They are obviously feeling the strain of all this like the rest of us.

Most of the very rich will stop at nothing to exploit any situation to make even more money, despite watching the masses around them struggle to make ends meet. If anything at all good comes from this situation, I sincerely hope it's a fairer system for particularly the working classes who have been overlooked for years, if not since the dawn of time. Do not hold your breath, IIRC, the system was changed irrevocably in the Thatcher era. It was beautifully illustrated by an economist at the time. bavarianbrit
Bugatti. Here is a daft one for you, during the last crash around 2009ish I was asked to go up to Wolfsburg to a large engineering consultancy for an interview as chief engineer on a project, a VW something or other car thought I. Well it was August and hot so I turned up in summer chinos and an open neck shirt as all offices are wearing laid back dress these days. Went into the interview and it was like a Micheal Douglas film they were all dressed in pinstripe suits two long rows of them, oops think I. Thank you for coming started one of them then they began asking about my composite body experience. "Stop" say I "which model are we on about"? Oh it"s the next Bugatti. I thanked them and said it was a number too large for me to have to report to Martin Winterkorn etc on a daily basis. Made me laugh though, I was in the final three candidates they told me afterwards.

southeastpete
I think footballers wages are a joke at the best of times never mind now. I do work for 3 millionaires locally, 30mill+. I was thinking to myself, if I had that much, what’s one million at a time like this. Any of them could go to the local hospital and ask what they need. If I had even 30,000 in the bank I’d easily take a few grand out to try and help the local hospital, or elderly/infirm in my area. what i don’t get is the 80% up to 2500. If mortgages and loans and rent don’t have to be paid during this time, who needs that much money! electric, gas/oil/logs, water, internet, food. That’s all that needs paying at the moment. Everyone should get the same at a time like this, and it doesn’t need to be as much as 2500! I and many others manage to survive on far far less than that in a normal month! Very good points raised, although I'm not sure on the position of mortgages, I don't think you'd get evicted at the moment, but I think you still owe the money which would put people in inescapable debt by the time this is over. Many of the younger generation have huge mortgages through no fault of their own, as the cost of property is so large compared to their earnings. I'm not saying 2.5k to everyone is the best way, but I'm not sure there's that many other better solutions, maybe pay people's essential bills, plus living expenses? Although that would be very complicated to roll out.

On a mortgage that may finish in 10-25 years, it’s not a massive extra time. i thought about them paying bills etc, but then people would get silly and use loads just because they can. I could handle the engineering no sweat as a mate was working there so I had the inside nod on how it worked but my German is good spoken and reading, my written is miserable and the report writing would have been awful for me. Sad as I would love to have done it, I finished off my carrier at RR motors on two projects so quite happy. The word is VW make a big loss on each one made. 5 hours ago, southeastpete said: I think footballers wages are a joke at the best of times never mind now. I believe that interest continues to accrue so it is more debt but agree on a long term mortgage it isn’t significant.

I agree completely, but my theory on this may be a little controversial ........ but here goes; People who are successful, and this particularly goes for sports, but applies in business as well, are fiercely competitive by nature. I remember seeing two from the 'Dragons Den' series - Peter Jones and Theo Paphetis I think competing in the old Clarkson team fronted 'Star in a reasonably priced car' - and they were very very competitive, as are many of the sports people who were included in that 'challenge'. There is a fine line between the desire to 'win' and 'pure greed'. I think that the HUGE salaries negotiated by many leading footballers are less about being able to buy fleets of fancy cars, fine (or garish depending on how you view these things) houses, and the other trappings of material wealth - and more about getting a bigger salary than your 'rivals'. Obviously the sporting agents play along as they are on commission! When I used to run a commercial shoot (20+ years ago now) - some of the 'business guest' teams included successful people (I believe there was even a footballer once - though I can't remember for certain). Once again - the 'competitive streak' occasionally came in and sometimes a word had to be said (via the host) about low birds or poaching neighbours birds because the occasional guest had to have a bigger tally than his neighbour. One host (who was obviously very experienced in entertaining guests with shooting!) used to 'fiddle' the pegs draw to ensure that certain people didn't stand next to certain others - because he knew that a 'competition' would ensue. It's all part of the make up that makes people very competitive (in my view) and doesn't always make them easy companions to the average person. Someone did the work on this when the salaries of bankers, top business men etc started to spiral upwards. The conclusion was not that they needed the money, they had more than enough. It was the fact that their wage was seen as a rank or status. They believed they were better than their counterparts if their salaries were greater.
