samboy
Hi gang. Just had a phone call on my land line supposedly from Amazon saying there is a suspicious activity on my account. It was supposed to be about me buying an i phone at £500. They then said press button 1 or 2 to carry on when i decided to hang up. I then rang Amazon and they said it was a spam. So be careful and never press any buttons when asked to if you are in doubt. Amazon has sent me a'n e mail to confirm it is a spam. Walker570
There must be some seriously dumb people out there to make it worthwhile to these criminals. I just put the phone to one side and let them rabbit, they are paying for the call.
DUNKS
Yesterday had an Indian guy telling me my credit card had been compromised and used to buy a camera from Amazon. Said he was from debit card security and If I gave him a few details he would make sure the amount would be reimbursed. He sounded quite plausible. Afraid I hung up on him. I had exactly that this morning, except it was a woman’s voice on a recorded message wanting me to press 1 or 2 to continue the reimbursement. udderlyoffroad
The Venn diagram overlap of 'people who fall for this sort of thing' and 'people over 75' is rather large, it is true. Thus, the older people are targeted by scammers, and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. But, people of the older generation will actually engage with these people. The younger generations will just hang up, if they even answer the phone at all. Guess which course of action leaves you on the scammers' list of viable numbers? Do not engage, do not leave the phone off its cradle allowing them to rabbit, do not try to be funny/insulting to them. It is all counter productive, and you're only making things worse for yourself. Just hang up. Edited February 3, 2022 by udderlyoffroad
Walker570
Do these heaps of garbage pay for these calls? If si why are the providers not cutting them off? I still think there must be a lot of dumb people about which is compounded by people I see every day. If they consider I am being insulting by calling them dumb then so be it. discobob
2 hours ago, Walker570 said: Do these heaps of garbage pay for these calls? A lot (if not 99%) actually come from overseas - using VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) and they will be paying a fixed fee to the provider. One of the biggest providers back in the day was Cable and Wireless. The call would come from India (or another country) - pop out on their (C&W) equipment and be given a UK number as an identity. No doubt that nowadays there are many companies that offer this capability - and TBH I am well behind TELCO/Carrier technology nowadays As these scam companies are based overseas they don't abide by the preference calling system. Lord O War
A mate of mine loves these calls and leads them on for ages, his thinking is while he has them they arent robbing someone . His best one was when they were trying to get access to his pc via the the remote access tool on the pc. They told him what to do and he said he was doing, he wasnt, and it want working. After dragging this out for a while the scammer gave up and gave my mate the access code for their pc! He was literally no they didnt do that! So he then proceeded to scour their pc for stuff while claiming that it still wasnt working. He did find some info on peeps that had been scammed but not much. Then he started to delete system file. At this point he asked them where all the good stuff was on their pc and he was met with silence for a seconf then lots of swearing and a dead phone line. Unbeliveably he still gets the odd call. The info he found some of it contained all bank details for some poor sucker. He called the bank and explained what had happened. They couldent confirm the details were correct but he did get a thank you. The other details were a phone number and address and he called the number and explained to them as well. He ended up talking to the son and basically got the *** not again and another thanks. I think there are a few channels on youtube that bait the scammers sounds fun. lol
