I have seen the future - and I don't think that I (my job) am in it

There is something new - ChatGPT from Openai - I have done a small bit of research and tested it with some job relevant requests

It works

My future is dark - I think I will be working in a supermarket in a few years

This could be the end for knowledge based workers - solicitors, techies, doctors....

it could be worse , you could be sat outside the supermarket asking for change !

Geetting answers is one thing, putting those answers intro practice is another, while some people can watch a video and then do simple things they would not be able to do more complex tasks.
I think i will stick to a surgeon for my next operation rather than "bob" from down the road who has watched a few videos and also looked up how to operate on humans, and thinks he could whip my appendix out in under 5 mins.

This technology is an aid not a replacement to the complex computer they call "human"

I asked it to write a script that would take me a day to do - 10 seconds later I am looking at that script - I didn't test it (as I was on my phone) but it proof read as being good - in itself the script is not that useful - but would need chaining together with other elements to become useful

But this is in Open Beta - and is only up to 2021

It will only get better

Linus Tech Tips done a video on it -

Another point is that AI works from an existing knowledge base.

Research opens up new fields.

So, as in business and manufacturing, routine, boring tasks can be left to the machine whilst the humans specialise in original thought

As one guy put - he thought it would be the manual labourers that would be at risk first from robots/automation, but now it is the knowledge workers that are at risk with this.

you can actually narrow down your requirements within the chat thread - however once that thread is removed it is gone

I do think that it will be a case of the one eyed man in the kingdom of the blind is king - I am going to be all over this to keep myself "relevant"

The trouble is that there are not many that can do "original thought" in a technical or other arena's - a hell of a lot of stuff is re-hashed from their work.

I think that Google will really suffer - the company Openai is funded by Elon Musk so I don't think that there is a risk of it being bought out by them

I could whip your appendix out in less than that. Not sure how much cecum or large intestine that you would have left, or your survival chance?
But hey, could be a fun experience.

as one commentator put it - he always thought that manual labourers would be the first due to Robotics (and indeed it has to some degree - there is a place in the UK where Just Eat or the such like company is using little automobots to deliver food) however there are limitations on a lot of what can be done including power for the robot - this ChatGPT is however a big risk for those people who are paid for what they know - the knowledge workers.

I have used it already to knock out 3 scripts this morning while I have been doing other stuff - they will need some tailoring but have saved me a few hours that I never seem to get....

Go on YouTube and watch the dancing robots by Boston Dynamics.

The scarey thing is its NOT a fake or enhanced video. It's real robots and they are really dancing. Robotics is the future whether we like it or not

Robots have already taken over so many fuctions previously carried out by humans.

Remarkable as that may seem, its nothing compared to humans, look at your hand, the functions it can perform, from picking up the tiniest object to building a ship, this hand even has the ability to repair itself if broken or cut, couple this with an incredible computer [brain] and the hand can heal others, paint, play musical instruments, make robots, a very very long list,  humans like all living things are astounding. some humans are even beautiful.😉

Working in IT as I do for a software vendor that makes a big play on 'AI', I do struggle with separating true Artificial Intelligence from simple logic based processes.

Within the tech sector there have been IT based capabilities called 'Knowledge Trees' where known facts are compared against a question i.e.

Shotgun doesn't fire:

Is it loaded Y/N

1 cartridge Y/N

2 cartridges Y/N

Is the the correct chamber selected Y/N

And so on - we have probably all encountered such things as it falls into the category of 'automated help' and this is pure logic.

AI is a whole different thing where the software attempts to predict an outcome or event based on the availability of data that maybe/may not be be present and extrapolates a probable conclusion/path of action based on previously learned events.  This whole thing gets incredibly complicated - what if the previously learned events belonged to someone else - is that their intellectual property?

I was a plain and simple security officer at a university even if i say it myself good at my job covered for the supervisor when he was on holiday  i knew nearly everybody including the principal and they all spoke to me i had 20 years in wasn't looking foreword to chasing students as i got to retirement age at 67 . Then suddenly we got taken over by a new boss and we where called safeguarding got a brand new i phone 12 at the time and a new state of the art control room and everything was done threw these electronically . A big shake up for me but i suffered a fall and did a bit of damage to my left knee and while i was off a year  the new security manager bullied 14 of my mates out the door and replaced them with whizz kids , made it clear i was top of his wish list of 6  long serving guys to go . So i kinda dug my heels in and outlasted him LOL . I took early retirement threw ill health at 60 and  I am still terrified of computers and apart from browsing a few sites i will admit i am hopeless on them the wife and kids are sick of me asking them to post picts after being shown loads of times . Being honest i leave my phone laying till i need it or it rings . Why cant the old just be allowed to grow old gracefully i saw the new robotarium at work and it was like magic to me LOL

I assume in this context script means python or some other high level language to automate an IT sysadmin type task?

Indeed - Powershell - some simple metrics logging to prove my stats for Appraisal malarky....More than likely something I wouldn't have got around to doing.

We use a thing called TALENT - I can then attach lots of emails to it as evidence 😆
